I know this isn’t the place to go and ask medical advice and that I should have my friend go to a doctor though realistically speaking going to a doctor here will cost you $500 just for one check up and yes I have actually contacted them and asked.
Well I am hoping for some one who had the same experience can advise. I have a friend that constantly forgets and I mean literally forgets everything, not sure if he closed the door, forgets to put on his shoes even and he forgets a lot of material in class so by the end of class he forgotten what was taught in the beginning.
has anyone dealt with this or can give some advice or idea of what could this be or how it could be treated?
If he forgets to put on his shoes when he leaves the house and has to be reminded it is probably a serious condition! I would post on a medical forum somewhere and tell them his age and symptoms to see what other people think.
That sounds like an incredibly serious mental condition related to a lack of short term memory, somehow I doubt anyone with that sort of condition is going to be posting on SP.
I’m sure many of them are hospitalized for their own protection. They would potentially be a danger to themselves and others, not out of malice but simply from things like cooking food and forgetting that the oven is on thus causing fires, not remembering to pay their bills and losing their homes, etc…
yeah the doctors are very expensive when you need one.
i doubt he needs hospitalization. unfortunately stem cell research is banned or isn’t out there too much but that is a whole different topic, just could help him.
My advice would be to pay the money and seek proper medical treatment. If he’s suffering memory dysfunction it could be a sign of trauma to the head (more specifically the part of the brain dealing with memory (Hippocampus - yes that is it’s name… seriously), it could also (depending on their age) be a sign of alzheimers or another serious condition. The fact is that saying they forget everything really isn’t enough for anyone, even an experienced medical professional to make a formal judgement. They need to be examined properly. Getting medical advice from forums or chat rooms or other Internet sites is HIGHLY DANGEROUS, especially if you are placing their treatment entirely upon such mediums, you could risk the condition being wrongly diagnosed (very easily), wrong or ineffective treatments being given (with potentially severe side effects) or something worse occurring. If you care about this individual, get them seen properly as memory dysfunction can be very damaging to their lifestyle and ability to function. The brain is a very delicate piece of equipment, gambling it’s function on non-trained individuals is pretty crazy IMO.
PS: I am not a doctor or a trained medical professional, I have a background in related fields however my advice is not to be taken as a prescription of treatment.
