1920 vs 1366 resolution screen for a nearsighted coder

Hello Guys,

First of all I am not sure if this is the right place to post this query.

Anyhow I am going to buy a new 15.6" laptop in a couple of days however I am confused between a Full HD (1920 x 1080) and normal (1366 x 768) screen.

I’ve been using 1366 / 1280 screens since last 8 years and have no issues so far.

I am a coder and uses my laptop 6-8 hours a day.

Now most of the guys on the web recommend a 1920 x 1080 screen resolution however I have also heard that a higher resolution screen can give serious eye strain (due to smaller and sharp fonts) especially if you have nearsightedness and wear specs.

I am unable to check a full HD screen as nobody in my circle owns it and I live at a place with a very few computer stores.

Can you please help me and recommend which resolution should I buy and if this myth, that a higher resolution is bad for eyes, is true?

Thanks.

More info:

I use an iPad (Retina) and also have a full HD 24" monitor but I feel serious discomfort and heavy head after say 15 - 30 minutes on both the screens. Now iPad has a glossy screen which could be reason however the 24" monitor has a matte screen but is still not comfortable to use. But since I have not tested a full HD resolution on a 15" monitor - I am really confused as I have to upgrade my laptop urgently.

You should be able to increase font size in your OS, Browser and Code Editor, if it’s a problem.

I’m short-sighted (near sighted) and have an HD laptop. I generally use the desktop, which doesn’t have an HD monitor and which suits me very well. When I use the laptop, as @SamA74 says, I generally need to increase the font size to make reading comfortable. (I have other problems which cause blurred/double vision when I get tired, so I do my best to avoid eye strain or anything similar.)

My husband (slightly long-sighted) uses the laptop (with his reading glasses) a lot more than I do, and has never complained about the display at all. He has similar problems to me with blurred/double vision, but has never mentioned the laptop display contributing to or inducing this.

Dunno if that’s much help to you.

Anyhow thanks again for the prompt reply.

Hi Technobear,

Thanks for the details.

I think this sort of eye strain is related with nearsighted people as the screen is almost 1.5 to 2 feet away from you. I have a full HD monitor and I really cannot work on it for more than 30 minutes. I think apart from size, the sharpness of fonts also has an effect on your eyes. But a 24" monitor has a bigger real estate so that might also be a case.

Anyhow thanks again for your reply.
