I respect your opinion of course, but I don't agree with you :-) You are right that developing your own solution gives you certain benefits, but this makes your customer totally dependably of you and your development capacity can become a bottleneck.
Magento can be expensive in programming in development, but that depends of how much you are willing to settle with out-of-the-box functionality and design. But like I mentioned in the article, as a developer this gives you plenty of business opportunities.

Thank you for your comment. You won't find it difficult to integrate a payment gateway with both solutions. It's done by adding the relevant plugin, and setting up is easy (and the difficulty mostly depends on the payment provider).
Both enable you to use SSL, WooCommerce only a dedicated SSL certificate though.
Hope this helps,

It is a bloated piece of garbage that is too difficult to develop and maintain. You cannot get data out of the database using SQL and it uses so much server resources that some ISPs even state that you cannot host a Magento site on their servers.
You really should checkout Prestashop. It has all the same features as Magento, easier to setup, develop, and maintain. It is cheaper in the long run because it is easier to template and you can find add-ons that are much cheaper than the ones for Magento.

Why does everyone suggest Magento? I wanted to present two options, one to start with (WooCommerce) and an more advanced solution (Magento) when you move along. While I admit there are much more solutions, for this article I wanted to go my in-depth than with my hosted shopping cart article. Comparing only 2 solutions was needed for it to fit in 1 article. But I'll keep it in mind, maybe in a future article.
Thanks,
Jacco

Hi,

I wanted to present two options, one to start with (WooCommerce) and an more advanced solution (Magento) when you move along.
