EDITOR'S ROUNDUP - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

SitePoint is setting a record-breaking pace! We're expanding so
fast that we had to add a new section to the Community Crier.

In Around the Town [1], we'll look at a new forum, a new
marketplace, and a new Facebook page. There are also more prize
giveaways and an invitation to a SitePoint-sponsored
presentation.

The SitePoint publishing team is proud to announce the fourth
edition of a favorite publication. And the SitePoint blogging
team have shared with us a range of tips about web design, SEO,
and collaborating with clients.

With all this activity, you might need a break. Pathfinders [2]
suggests a great place to take one.

Since our last newsletter:

 - We've added two new Simply Brilliant [3] staff members and
interviewed an inspiring Member of the Month.

 - We had some great fun with last month's Shout-out [4] and
hope you'll give us the time of day in this month's.

 - A new SitePoint Social Group [5] calls for your attention.

Looking for some new faces? You'll surely find them in
Introductions. Stop by and say "Hello There!" [6]

Are you ready to run? Let's go!

AROUND THE TOWN - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

EVENTS

On July 5, Shayne Tilley introduced a new forum at SitePoint:
the Content Reviews forum [1]. Like the Site Reviews forum,
Content Reviews is a moderated forum, but if you follow the
guidelines, you'll find it's easy to gain feedback on your
written content.

On June 22, SitePoint premiered Flippa.com [2], the new home for
web site buyers and sellers of premium, established, and startup
web sites.

The SitePoint Marketplace [3] is still open for Looking to Hire
and Advertise Your Services classifieds, as well as other
products and services for sale. Discussions are open on
Marketplace expansion possibilities. What do you think the
SitePoint Marketplace should focus on? Leave your feedback in
Shayne's thread, flippa.com: It's Alive [4].

Rachael Wilson announced the winners of the Flash Builder
Giveaway [5] late last month. Stop by the thread and
congratulate prizewinners Joseph Sims, Curt Tweedle, and Wayne
McManus.

Connect with SitePoint on Facebook [6]. Our new Facebook page is
up, and we'd like to know what you want to see on it. Leave your
suggestions in the thread or visit the page [7] to see how we're
doing so far!

SitePoint is a Gold Sponsor for the July Melbourne Web Standards
Group (WSG) meeting on Monday, July 20. The topic is CSS3
Reloaded, where John Allsopp will present what's been happening
behind the scenes with CSS3. If you live in Melbourne, log in
here [8] to RSVP for this event.

BOOKS

If you missed the early editions of Build Your Own Database
Driven Web Site Using PHP & MySQL [9] by Kevin Yank, the fourth
edition is hot off the presses. Purchase the book directly from
SitePoint and receive a free PHP reference poster as a bonus.

BLOGS

Andrew Tetlaw shares his experience of building a desktop
application in Adobe AIR in "Take Your CSS to the Desktop with
Adobe AIR! [10]" If you're an Adobe AIR fan, you'll enjoy
testing your knowledge with the quiz at the end of this article.

If you're a photo blogger, Five jQuery Galleries and Slideshows
[11] is a must-read blog post. Jennifer Farley provides the
demos and downloads that make plugging into your photos almost
as easy as snapping a picture.

It's common knowledge that web development businesses are built
on referrals. In Referrals: How Do You Say Thank You? [12],
Alyssa Gregory examines several ways to express your gratitude
that will keep those referrals coming in again and again.

In SEO: What's Hot and What's Not [13], Mihaela Lica shows us
how to use social networking, linkbaiting, and long-tail
keywords to build on your online community and maximize your
social networks.

ARTICLES

Bruce Lawson takes us through the ins and outs of HTML 5 in Yes,
You Can Use HTML 5 Today [14]! The question is, do you want to?
Read the article and decide.

Paul Boag shares seven win-win steps that can help designers and
clients dodge The Battlefield of Design: Designers vs Clients
[15], with tips on avoiding confrontation and building
collaborative relationships.

PATHFINDERS - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

With all this activity, do you need a break?

At SitePoint, General Chat [1] is the place to kick off your
shoes and become involved in the lighter side of forum
membership. Aside from being the spot to take part in the
Community Crier Monthly Shout-out [2], you'll find discussion on
such items as The Big Thread of Meaningless Milestones [3], The

SIMPLY BRILLIANT - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

NEW STAFF

Back in 2004, a very impressive designer frequented the old
SitePoint Design Contests forums. She's still impressive today
and it's a pleasure to now welcome her to SitePoint staff.
Please stop by and congratulate kohoutek [1], our new Community
Team Mentor.

AlexDawson is simply an incredible individual. Last month's
MOTM, Alex is this month's newest Mentor. Please congratulate
Alex [2] on his new position on the Hosting Team.

MOTM

Mitteneague's interview of SitePoint's new MOTM [3], devbanana,
is one of the most inspiring I've ever read. Devbanana is a
computer programmer, a pianist, a forum owner, a blogger, and a
college student. Where he finds the time for all the activity is
a mystery. There's even more to the mystery of devbanana, but
I'll let you read all about it on the thread. So stop by the
MOTM thread, become inspired by devbanana, and offer him your
congrats!

SHOUT-OUT - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR COOL?

Whether you're hot under the collar or just plain hot, last
month we asked "How Do You Keep Your Cool?" [1] Although our
poll was based towards "just plain hot", many of our members
suggested ways to stay cool when tempers are ready to flare.

 - Mrandrei uses both long, cold showers and long, hot steam
baths to keep his cool.

 - my_misvel keeps cool by shopping in air conditioned malls.
Shopping is also a great stress relief for me.

 - Darren884 and CaptainKay escape the heat by jumping into a
pool.

 - kohoutek keeps her cool by eating "extremely hot and spicy
food."

 - matt348 finds that a good, relaxing motorcycle ride blows the
heat right away.

 - cyberwhiz takes a 45-minute walk to keep his cool, while
riazishere takes a deep breath to stay cool.

 - 6% of respondents just sizzle until they burn out, while 25%
are just always "totally cool!"

What about you? If you have some tips on keeping your cool or
just staying cool, stop by and leave them in the thread.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TIME OF THE DAY?

I love morning, especially when I'm up in time to see the
sunrise.

This month I wonder "What's your favorite time of the day?" [2]
Pick a time from our poll and tell us why it's your favorite in
the Shout-out thread:

1. Very early morning (midnight to sunrise)

1. Morning (sunrise to midday)

1. Afternoon (midday to sunset)

1. Evening (sunset to midnight)
