Hello Tribuners,
Welcome to the first issue of the HTML Edition of the SitePoint Tribune!
A lot of hard work went into the creation of this newsletter by our crack designer, Julian Carroll. With the aid of a few hundred beta testers, Julian managed to get this newsletter working in virtually every email client that supports HTML. We hope you enjoy the final product!
Send your comments, both good and bad to htmltribune@sitepoint.com. If you'd like to return to receiving the text only version of this newsletter, simply click here.
In this fast-changing world of ours, the only way to remain on the map is by immersing yourself in information about the industry that you're in.
Though I don't know everything about building, promoting and profiting online, I can hold my own. How? By reading massive amounts of material. Here's a special, behind-the-scenes snapshot of my knowledge library.
The stack of magazines that you see is what I've read during the past few months. Fortune. Business 2.0. eCompany Now.
Tedious? No. Rewarding? Very.
I urge you to work on building your own library of knowledge as
it relates to you personally, your career, and your business.
Until next week,
Matt Mickiewicz

Editor's Perspective...
US Entrepreneurs -- Get Free Business Advice From Pros!
Many small companies pay thousands for 'consultants' who end up
offering one-size-fits-all solutions. Many more small
businesses avoid getting help they need altogether because of
the costs involved. What they don't know, and what you may not
be aware of, is that you can get help for free.
The SCORE Association (Service Corps of Retired Executives) is
a nonprofit association comprised of 11,500 volunteer business
counselors throughout the U.S.
SCORE members are trained to serve as counselors, advisors and
mentors to aspiring entrepreneurs and business owners. These
services are offered at no fee, as a community service. SCORE
was formed in 1964, and nearly 4 million Americans have utilized
SCORE services.
They offer help via email for free. You can also attend
low-cost workshops and seminars in your local area.
SCORE performs a truly great task: helping the next generation
of executives and business owners succeed.
SitePoint Members Chime in on their Favourite Registrars
Recently, dozens of SitePoint Members chimed in, telling us
their favourite places to register domain names. Four companies
clearly stood out: 000Domains.com, RegisterFly.com, Dotster.com
and Gandi.net. Here's the complete list:
1) 000Domains - 13 votes
2) Register Fly - 10 votes
3) DotSter - 7 votes
4) Gandi - 6 votes
Dozens of other votes were spread out between dozens of other
registrars.
Price is clearly not the biggest factor in deciding users'
preferences. 000Domains.com, which came in at first place,
charges $13.50 per year. Second place winner, RegisterFly,
asks for $9.99 per year. Gandi.net, which charges $10.25 US
came in at fourth place, while DotSter, which is 50% more
expensive at $14.95 per year, came third.
Want the Ad Dollars? Focus and Dump the Freebie Seekers
The owner of 1Lit.com writes:
"The current advertising market is difficult and I've read many
webmasters in the SitePoint Forums complaining that it's
becoming impossible to generate a decent income. Here's my 2
cents on the subject.
I'm not sure about the SitePoint Forums, but in the other ones
where I hang about I've grown to realize that most webmasters
have 'freebie' sites, bikini ones, or galleries of
actresses/models etc. They're always boasting about how much
traffic they get. They're not so keen to divulge how much
income they are earning.
In my opinion, it's difficult to make money with freebie and
babe sites, etc. The type of people you are attracting are unlikely
to own credit cards, much less spend serious money online.
Hence, the only income these sites can earn is 1 cent per click
that most freebie affiliate programs now 'pay' you or 30 cents
per lead. Of course, you have to send about 500 people to
generate one lead. Of course, in many cases you'll get paid
zilch because the affiliate program will close down/not track
your referrals properly.
I have done the opposite of what many people are doing.
I run a family-friendly intellectual literary ezine called
1Lit.com. Terribly serious. Terribly boring. We discuss Latin
literature and the like; Latin as in the language of the
Romans.
Approximately 60% of my subscriber base has an income of over
$80,000 per annum. I receive regular emails from online and
offline businesses asking to advertise with me. The income from
those advertisers is good.
I'm not saying this is the only way to go, but it's the way
I've been able to survive. I'm not making mega-bucks, and the
current market condition are affecting me. But times are not ALL
that bad for me.
I believe you have to find your niche and then try to dominate
it as much as you can.
There are TOO many general and webmaster freebie sites out
there and the demographics of the people who come to these
sites are poor. If the only hook you have is to offer FREE
stuff on your site, you are going to find it difficult to sell
a $50 product to the surfer who has headed to your website.
Promoting a freebie site is akin to screaming: "Who's spent all
their money on lottery tickets and cigarettes and now can't
afford to buy anything on the net? Come to my site and I'll
give you *everything* for gratis!"
Of course, nothing really is free and so you, or the merchant
you are an affiliate of, have to persuade these surfers to
purchase something. Which is an impossible task. Unless you
are exceptionally talented."
To summarize: Think about the type of people you will be
attracting with your website before you write your first line
of HTML code. Consider how you're going to make money before
you build the site, and not after. If you've already built it,
it may be time to reconsider dumping it and moving on to
something else.
Generation 2001
According to a recent Harris Poll, 99% of senior college
students in the US use the Internet. 90% send and receive email
on a daily or frequent basis. The average member of
Generation2001 (as the group was dubbed) spends 11 hours a week
online vs. 6 hours when they were freshmen.
However, just because they use the Internet, doesn't mean that
they want to work in the industry. College and Business school
graduates have shied away from dot-coms with the downturn in
the NASDAQ. Just 5% of US college grads view the Internet as
the "hottest industry" this year, as compared to 36% a year
ago. Only 1% of MBAs ranked it as the hottest industry.

.Biz Is Coming!
If you have a trademarked name, you have until July 9, 2001 to
register an Intellectual Property (IP) Claim Form with NeuLevel.
A registration costs $90 and guarantees that you'll be notified
if anybody else is claiming the name. On October 1, 2001
every company that's placed an IP claim will find out whether
they're the sole claimants to a name, or they're competing for
it. If you are lucky enough to be the sole registrant, you can go
ahead and register the name through any registrar of your
choosing.

Script of the Week...
Peter Lantec, of http://www.worldwebpromote.com/ suggested
this week's script: Disable Style Sheets WiDGet .
This incredibly useful script adds an option to the right click
menu in Internet Explorer, giving you the ability to view a Web
page without embedded or external Style Sheets.
So why should you care? This script is not only useful to see how
your site looks to those without a CSS-enabled browser, but gives
invaluable insight on how other sites like Microsoft deal with
formatting their site for non-CSS visitors.
Script Name: Disable Style Sheets WiDGet

mean you can't make great, colorful web sites.

Know of a good utility/program that should be Download of the Week?

The Weekly Tip List...
Each week, the Weekly Tip List features either Promotion or Web
Site Design tips on a rotating basis. This week we are featuring Promotion Tips:
Promotion Tips:
<-> In the United Kingdom, the editors of .NET mag set out on a
mission to show how easy it is to attract visitors to a site with
a marketing budget of zero. .NET magazine found that many people
- including the national media - were only too happy to believe a
pack of lies.
They created the (hoax) site cheatingscum.com, purportedly to
post your cheating lover's pics on.
Representatives spent an afternoon in London with a sandwich
press release. Capital Radio, The Mirror and others picked it
up (not one reporter did any research into the facts, mind).
The site got 10,000 unique visitors in its first week. A
quality site will get referrals, and a UNIQUE, quality site
will get even more.
Have any tips? Share them.
Full credit is given for every tip published, including your name and URL.
