There is plenty of good advice that is free or cheap. The problem isn’t bad advice being out there, it’s that people do not follow the advice. Look at diets, do you think that over weight people actually follow diets? or are they human beings, lazy… always looking for the quick way out, the get rich quick scheme, the quick fix. You see it day in and day out with human behaviour, look at your friends and family on Facebook.

You don’t need to hire a mentor, you can just choose a mentor. There are countless people out there, that you don’t need to hire, you don’t need to talk to, but you can still follow their lead, their advice and get by. Although I treat a mentor is anyone you can learn from, past or present.

Sitepoint offers a good book for Freelancers for instance. Follow 25% of whats in the book and you’ll do just fine, follow 80% and… well you’ll be doing better than most =)

One thing you might want to keep in mind…you aren’t restricted to only one mentor. You can most definitely find people who are willing to help you within their limited sphere of expertise. For example, after college, I was particularly close to one of my professors. She answered questions I had about the industry. When I needed advise about running my business, I turned to my grandpa – who had decades of experience. The point is, find people you can trust. We all know there is no prerequisite to starting a website or writing a book. True help is hard to come by.

A mentor is an antidote to the "countless people out there offering free advice" and all the cheap books. A good mentor, whether paid or not, gives good advice.

You don’t ever need to hire a mentor. That’s a stupid idea.

There are countless people out there offering free advice via blogs, also buy a book, that’s cheaper.

How viable is this for people starting out with minimal income though? I can’t help but think research online could save you some money but i may be wrong?
