Kicking things off

Hello!

Since this is my first entry on a new blog, I’d better start off by introducing myself. I’m a web developer from the UK, currently working in Lawrence, Kansas for the industrial placement year of my computer science degree at the University of Bath. I’ve been blogging for nearly two years at my personal weblog on a large variety of predominantly geeky subjects, mostly relating to web development in its many forms.

If I already have a blog, you may ask why I’m blogging here. Aside from the truck-load of money SitePoint deposited on my doorstep[1] I’m greatly looking forward to working on a blog with a single, defined subject. I will be focusing exclusively on client-side development: HTML, CSS and Javascript, the three essential elements of a modern web site. I’ll be examining modern techniques, linking to interesting new ideas and of course waxing lyrical about how sensible, standards based coding can reduce development time and increase the quality of the web as a whole.

Blogging is all about linking, and I plan to keep the links flowing freely from day one. I’ll be keeping myself open to suggestions; if you see anything out there that you think deserves discussion please drop me a line.

[1] OK so it’s not a truck-load, but I feel it’s important to disclose that this is a paid position.

Well, it seems that the system is functional, good luck if they left truckloads of money they must have good faith in your ability.

Simon – having read your personal blog for the best part of year, I’m really looking forward to this gaining momentum.

But you’ll be expecting this: any chance of an RSS feed?

I would imagine there are good reasons not too, but decent summaries would be enough to get me back to the Web site (if that’s a concern).

If you can come up with an RSS feed, I’ll be back. Otherwise I’ll stick to your real weblog.

The SitePoint guys have confirmed that they’re working on RSS support. Hopefully the feeds will be ready in time for the official launch of the blogs on Monday.
