What is the best way to learn about browser compatibility

Hi,

I have been trying to learn more about layouts using CSS and it looks like the hardest part would be the to learn the browsers differences and tweak your code accordingly especially for IE, so I was wondering how or what would be the best way to learn about this since the books don't really talk about it?

Or this apply only for older browsers? Newer browser have less issues?

Can some direct me to where I can learn about this topic?
