Do you blog + do you know of SPF members who blog?

I've just started a blog (feedback greatly appreciated):

http://www.bath.ac.uk/~cs1spw/blog/

Do any other SPF members run blogs? I'm really enjoying running mine - it helps me keep track of my thoughts and acts as a handy alternative to bookmarks (if I see something I like I can blog it instead).

Err... What's a blog?

I mean, I looked at yours, and I think 'blog' is just another word for 'weblog', right? If that's the case, than at least I know what we're discussing here...

Yes, blog is short for weblog (I should have said weblog in my previous post).

I blog (see my sig).

I really have to make it standards compliant though, my drop down menu isn't in the right place when I check it in Netscape.

I'm the resident blogger here, started blogging in may 2000
I've taken a break from blogging since last september, but I'll be starting again in July on http://tidakada.com.
(Actually it's not that much of a break, since I was coding b2 for other bloggers.)

By the way, you can blog for a charity this year, with the second edition of the Blogathon !

By the way Skunk, how did you go about multiple categories ? I was thinking about a table with many-to-many relationships, but I'm not sure. Can you share some insight ?

Oddly enough I didn't even use a database for my blog (I don't have access to a mySQL account on my University hosting). The whole thing is just one big serialized PHP object in a text file. Categories are defined as a 2D array which maps the category shortname (e.g "markup") to the category descriptive name (e.g "XHTML, HTML and CSS"). Entries are represented by an "Entry" class which has a categories array in it, then I put the shortnames of the categories an entry belongs to in to the array.

To avoid the unserializing-and-iterating-through-every-entry-to-find-stuff-in-a-certain-category becoming a performance problem the actual category pagse are cached as a full HTML page and only rebuilt when an entry is added to the category.

It's been working fine so far but I only have 4 days worth of entries in there. Should size ever become a problem I'll probably move to using a database instead, in which case I would definitely use a many-to-many relationship to cross reference entries with the categories they belong to.

I need to start a blog... my life and friends demand -something- online to chronicle the hillarity...

I've taken it upon myself to create my own blog / comic / article system using php and mySQL... unfortunately, being an MIS major, I'm having so much fun designing the damn thing that the coding hasn't been very forth-coming. Although I do have a lovely data diagram of the tables...

I'm looking create a system where things like front page announcements, multi-page articles, image galleries, polls, feedback forms--the whole nine yards essentially--can be related into a single "entry"; that way, each entry can reflect the unique nature of what I want to include at the time. Needless to say, it's ambitious.

I know there are some free / open source solutions out there that would be able to do almost everything I'm looking for... but I've got to have some kind of hoby that doens't involve staring at a TV...

I have a blog on a family site that I or the wife use every once in awhile (to keep everyone abreast of what's happening).

Also I have a client (church) that I did a full site for. The only regular changes they have is a calendar that needs to be updated weekly. Since they are not html savvy, I set the calendar page up as a blog template and they merely update it themselves now as needed as a blog.

Hehe morgion I know exactly what you mean. My original plan was to write a Wiki and create an extension for that that allowed me to build a blog on top of it... then I realised that that would take weeks where as the simple system I've got took less than 2 days Good luck though, sounds like a really exciting system.

The really easy solution can be found at www.blogger.com - I have never been happy about the way it works though . You should check out www.hotscripts.com and see if they have any free php/asp blogging scripts, depending on your server flavour...

Yep, I blog

Yep, I blog. Just started one, in fact. No PHP no fancy-shmancy. Just plain old HTML 4. If Ic ould afford a server that I could play with (instead of that crappy 10 meg Cox gives me...), I would probably make it worthwhile to read. But of course, it's my life, so I guess people would be interested...everyone loves to know what goes on in other people's lives...especially adults to teenagers...

Alot of my friends read my blog. Seeing as how these days I only see a few of them regularly. It's an easy way to tell your friends what you've been upto.

So I guess some people do care.

Plus I have a few regular readers now that I don't even know.

I'd like to add a small comments feature to my blog, but I'd need to learn PHP and MySQL, I think. Maybe this'll be the project that gets me to dive into that stuff. I know quite a few people read my DeadJournal (I'm going to delete that and then just tell people to use my shadow-runner one). They actually would comment on it, too. Just wish I could get rid of that pop-up ad, though. I'll check out prices on that domain at dot.tk...

If you want to add a comments feature to a site without having to mess around with server side scripting check this site out: http://www.quicktopic.com/

I just launched my blog yesterday --> www.aaronbrazell.com

I'm going to be adding features to it, but at least it's something to read and do. I'm already ranting. I'm always ranting! That's why I'm blogging now.
