Which PHP editor to buy or download?

Hi

I m now working on PHP with Kevin's book =) I wonder which editor I should buy?

I already have Ultraedit but prefer PHP editor due to highlights and some features (debugging and some) for only PHP.

I m thinking of buy one from zend.com but I want to know your opinion and your recommends.

Thanks

I like homesite. I only payed 99$. I don't even remember what version I have. But it is by far and away my favorite

If you do a search for 'php ide' or go investigate the 'Web Development Software' forum, you will get many many many more discussions on this topic

i use dreamweaver 4.0 ultradev. it's not perfect, but at least it doesn't mess-up/rewrite my php code (apart from certain cases, e.g. when you have some php loop to populate a select dropdown or something and then visually move/copy/paste/whatever said select...it just fills the select with unnamed options..grrr)...
when i just need to change some little things, i also like PFE (programmer's file editor) - i love the way you can switch a file from DOS to UNIX format in a click (very handy indeed)

A WYSIWIG php editor isn't something you'll want for good working backends since you'll only get it to really do what you want if you do the coding yourself.

I recommend EditPlus 2.
All kinds of good features, w/o impeding on the coding proccess.

I just love that flow chart on the front page. I've seen less twists in a plate of spaghetti.

Editplus. I've read that ultraedit is pretty good too. I occasionally use notepad when convenient. I don't know how to make ws_ftp open the editplus editor and save online. It opens but doesn't save file after editing?

that really doesn't make sense to me lol, where does ws_ftp come into open files saved online, it either uploads the file or downloads it?

reason i prefer notepad is because i can see the code more easily, so i can check for mistakes which i find difficult in any other program as they have options cluttered about, reducing visibility

At the right side of ws_ftp le panel where all online folders and files locate, if you right click on a file, it gives you a list of things - one of them is 'edit file', but I don't like its editor.

Can't remember how or when I configured it, but ws_ftp (pro) uses my default php editor for "live" editing. Oh, and on the subject, there can be only one!

phpED retails for $299.00 in it's NuSphere incarnation, but you can have a pre-nusphere version for a grand total of nothing from here

I use Dreamwever, but it has some odd time-out problems that can hang you system for a minute or two. Overall pretty good, but I wish it understoof PHP syntax checking.

I have used notedpad, but it would be my last choice.

I am also testing Zend, but it does not seem to have any good site management/uploading tools. I would probably love it if I had the server portion installed and could do true debugging of scripts. I would need to change ISP's I think, and that is too painful.

I hate hunting for editors/IDE's. Seems like I have been doing it for 20 years.

apparently i'm the only one on here who uses zend studio and the zend development environment.

i will admit that it is a bit expensive (i got it for 149$us, but i think it's now 195$us), but is worth the price. the project management is nicely done, and the features in v2.5 (currently in beta) make the product much better. the main reason i love zend studio is that it integrates completely with the other zend products. being able to click one button in the zde to encode the entire project saves a great deal of time. it also has remote debug capabilities, which works very well. you setup the zend studio server on your development/staging server and can test the script you're working on without having to ftp, launch your browser, check error logs, etc. this is worth every penny.

i still use notepad, ultraedit, and textpad on my windows boxes, as well as vim on my linux boxes for small projects and quick code changes. however, if i am working on a big project, or if i know i'll be spending more than a few minutes coding, i will launch the zend devlopment environment.
