Benifits of hosting own site
What are the core benifits of hosting your own website on your own "in house" server?

I would say you know exactly what is on the machine. Also if you find out there's an update out, you can do it WHEN you want it versus whenever the hosting company gets to it.

Well, the main benefit is FULL CONTROL, so you can do whatever you want. However, it's not very important if you have just a small website

You can just as easily have full control over a colocated box or a rented, dedicated box.
If you already have the infrastructure (most don't), self-hosting can work out to be a bit cheaper as you aren't paying for the host's profit margins in whatever services you need. On the other hand, you had better be able to provide redundant power/hvac & connectivity and 24x7 monitoring. At least if you need full, five-9s uptime. Depending on the scenario there can be some other advantages as well--such as if your app depends on some line of business app that is hosted locally, then it will be easier to establish communications and generally more responsive as there isn't a WAN link involved. |
