Domain name dilemma

Hi,
I am developing an ecommerce site for a client and am looking for some advice on whether or not to change his domain name. The current domain actually does really well in Google, but is set up like "townname + product + shop.com" (all one word). For google searches just for "product" + "shop", the site is 3rd in the rankings. I don't really want to change anything here, but the client has picked up the domain name without the town, e.g "product + shop.com", and would like to use this and remove the localisation of the site. I'm worried that by doing this, the current ranking position could be negatively affected. I'm thinking if it aint broke etc.

Do you guys have any advice? My thoughts are continue with the current domain and when the ecommerce site goes live (under the same domain) then hopefully this will get plenty of traffic and sales.
