It would be nice if Sitepoint released a book on Flex 3 / flex builder for those starting out in RIA.

I for one think Adobe Flex3 is the way out of of browser compatibility issue we face when deploying ajax solutions. I think it wont be a bad idea if sitepoint can release a book on Adobe Flex 3.

Have tried Flexbuilder and it is very very heavy, and doesn't compile nearly as well or as quickly as the free flashdevelop does. For those getting started, it might be easier to use the free tool.

Thank you for this nice introductory article.

For me resulted more flexible and practical to work with xhtml/php/MySQL and a javascript library, like jQuery or Mootools, only for those RIA features I really need to implement. And to use Flash for certain web page elements like banners. This gives my work better exposure to search engines than a pure Flash application.

I understand some browser issues, but I think these javascript libraries handle those issues pretty well.
Regrads, joejac

Hey, thanks for the super gentle intro! I think I just might be falling in love with Flex! I can't wait to learn more....

I've worked with JavaScript and OOP a little bit, so hopefully that will give me a small baseline understanding of the concepts. MXML and ActionScript may finally be the languages with just the right balance between web-style code and "hard"-style code.

The title of this article should be called, "An Introduction to Flex." To use Flex, you need to know ActionScript 3.0, and it would help to have some familiarity with Javascript coding. Hardly the stuff for absolute beginners!

Nevertheless, I appreciated the article because it introduced me to a program I knew little about. Thanks!

Thanks! This is a great intro tutorial. I've read a little about Flex in a book, but your tutorial sums things up pretty well.
