So if I guessed your plan right...

You're going to learn English... then write English... and grow a beard... and buy a laptop... so you can go to a European univerity... and see the woman's chest. Yes ??

It's Welsh for Wales. If you think English is a nightmare - wait 'till you see Welsh - a language with no vowels.

When I was applying to go to university, I had to apply to six, putting them in order of preference. I put Cardiff sixth (went to London instead), and at the time it was a pretty good university (for what I studied it was 17th or so in the ranking) and I think it still is. I know people who studied there and they had a brilliant time.

Ah, the great vowel wars of the languages, where Wales ended up with words like Llanfyllin (the name of my school lol) and France ended up with words like Eau (water).

Lol I've been learning welsh for over half a decade and I still can't speak it, and I hate it lol. Even worse, the welsh assembly insists that welsh is a compulsary subject for GCSE, meaning those of us who live here who want to go to a more successful country later in life are stuck with a useless gcse in a language even the welsh don't speak.

A quote from red dwarf:

Anyway, as to your question and PM, I live in Powys, a much more rural area than cardiff (roughly 0.9 people per square km population density lol), so I couldn't really say about the life there. However, the university is a really good quality one, and it's really popular with employers.
It's one of my fallback choices for university, after Cambridge of course .

Everyone living in Cardiff speaks English. Welsh is used and displayed on road signs, and other miscellaneous things. You will not need to learn Welsh in addition to English if you study in Wales.

In other words, if you master the English language, you'll have no problem getting around in America, Australia and Canada.

Welsh is a distinct language. pedestrians are cerddwyr

Welsh is (dare I say it?) practically a dead language.

Everyone I know in Wales speaks english, a small fraction of those also speak welsh. It's only really still around because:
  • The welsh government are making Welsh students aged 15-16 take the language as a GCSE
  • People who were bought up with Welsh want to keep it "alive".

I don't speak Welsh but I don't see a problem with people who do wanting to keep it alive as you say. I'm sure some people feel fairly strongly about doing so. I am for preserving any culture that needs supporting, or else the whole world would become homogenised into a single boring entity if we let the small things slide away - I don't agree that you should have to take Welsh as a G.C.S.E if you can demonstrate your abilities lie elswhere than in languages.

Yes you can. There is no problem. Most people in towns and citys that have Universities are very forgiving of people learning English.

CS Geek, you will have nothing to worry about.

Statistically, there are 3 million people in wales. only half a million speak welsh, and less than 100 people over 18 don't speak english fluently.
