Someone says if you use wordpress to design your website, you willnot need do the SEO work for them? Is this true?

Wordpress as a software is pretty SE-friendly out of the box. There are of course content techniques that WordPress has no control of.

I'd rather say using WordPress does a lot of SEO work for you, if you configure it properly and use it properly. By this I mean configuring the postslug and the permalink to use your poat title and not a query string, and using the proper tagging and categories system.

It doesn't do all the SEO work, but if you're in an uncompetitve niche or targetting low-competition keyowrds, then you may not need to do any SEO work to rank well.

Out of the box WordPress gives you the option to change permalinks etc. and gives full control over the HTML output. Some web based software don't give either of these features, or at least not without some serious hacking.

Out of the box it's pretty good but it's status is probably raised because a lot of other software is quite bad for SEO.

It does provide the ability to use search engine friendly URL's, unique titles and with a good template can use good semantic markup and a good navigational structure.

But I think what Stephen was getting at is that without good content and making use of this good structure, Wordpress can be just as bad as any other software.

Software on its own doesn't make for good search engine optimization. It's how that content is used in collaboration with that software that makes Wordpress a good tool.

I would say that wordpress is very easy to make seo friendly with a user friendly admin interface. Other CMSes lack in that. Obviously you will still need to build links etc.

You can have the "best" blogging software in the world but if your content is poor you will get nowhere.

You can build a highly optimised site using Wordpress (or any one of a dozen other blogging platforms) but doing "SEO" is more than one particular script.

I listened in to a webinar recently, and Henry Gold recommended the WordPress for really one reason...

CONTROL

Take that as you will, as said by others though, the content is what will be your "Victory" or your "Defeat" in the SEO wars...

I have a blog that where I use vBulletin . I just built few links for it way back in March. It has 90% duplicate content as I have no time to devote on it.

The blog has very very high ranking and sometimes outranks the site from where I get my contents ( a renowned newspaper).

So I would like to agree with what felgall said -no better/no worse. But yes Wordpress has some really nice features to configure permalinks..

It doesn't matter what CMS you have. What matters is if you have the right rankings factors. But wordpress is a good CMS in terms of SEO.

But that has nothing to do with SEO (and as far as blogging goes Wordpress beats it hands down).

That has absolutely nothing to do with the software. That has to do with what other webmasters choose to do with their website.

Indeed, wordpress is a SEO-friendly platform, but that doesn't mean that just installing it will be enough. I'd suggest looking into a plugin for having a different title for each post, one for adding meta tags (sure, they're not nearly as important as they used to be, but adding the definitely doesn't hurt) and one for avoiding duplicate content by telling robots which pages they should follow and which not.

For the past year about 25% of my clients websites I developed were on wordpress, they have been pretty happy with it when it comes to SEO because of the permalink structure and there is quite a few plugins/addons for SEO purpose. In my opinion wordpress is the best software out there right now just because it's so open and has plenty of tools to offer.
