LCD Screen and smoke

I have one 2 years old LCD monitor and one old school tube monitor.

Whenever there is cigarette smoke around the LCD monitor, it eventually refuses to relay the visual content. So I've located the whole thing in a smoke free room, all went fine, light up a cig one night and 2 days later, it went caput again.

Anyone with a similar experience?

I do know smoking is not good for your health, I believe it is also not good for LCD Monitors, or is it just mine, it`s a Compact 15 inch.

Smoking causes death and not only to the subject smoking. If you were taking courses as I am you would have been taught not to smoke around computer equipment.

It has the ill affect of creating non wanted elements to attach themselves to sensitive components. As such these could quit working and not only could but will.

I suggest getting in the habit of smoking outside or in another room as far away and with ventilation. Keep any electronic devices away from this as much as possible.

You may also want to buy yourself some canned air. Take the panel off of your computer when unplugged and blow it out good. The smoke particles can make your pc crash as well. It is recommended to do this every so often. As for your monitor if it still works count your blessings and otherwise try to learn from mistakes as we all do.

I would not suggest trying to open the LCD or perhaps even cleaning it. If you try to use the canned air on it if at all possible, you may blow particles into other areas and make things worse.

Thanks for your advice, I'll go for lolipops, canned air for cleaning, 100percent smoke free room and ventilation.

Did take a lot of computer courses and evidently did not smoke during classes or labs, nor in the school. All I remember about precaution is to ground yourself before unscrewing and working on the inside of the box, beware of static electricity, etc.

You may also want to try the soft or hard sticks of peppermint candy. Might help to fool your fingers into thinking they are holding something else. I am glad I was able to remind you of something ^. Hope things work out.

I'm a smoker, and I know your feelings of guilt!

Over the years I have found the following to work:
  • Buy yourself an air filter. These are not very expensive these days. Air filters are good for users who don't smoke as well.
  • Put your pack of cigarettes in another room so you have to get up and go for them. After you find them, step outside and smoke and get some fresh air. It's amazing how your vision clears up with this trick as well.
  • Pretend you are at school or work or a computer lab where smoking is not allowed and you can only go out and smoke on breaks. This really cuts down on your smoking and helps your health too!
  • I do open my computer up once a month and clean it out. I pay special attention to the fans, where things have a real tendency to pile up.
  • You can purchase filter material to line the inside of your computer with which helps cut down on the dust intake.
  • Back to your LCD issue, I think lighting up a smoke near it is just a coincidence. I'ld say its probably something far more technical. Best to take it to a technician and have it checked out.
Good luck!
