Sex.com sold for $14 Million

And that makes a new record...

And just for fun, which domains do you think are also valuable in the same level as sex.com? (no "company" names)

Some of these are company names but they began as simple nouns. Some of these are worth more than $14 million.

cars.com
houses.com
realestate.com
hotels.com
search.com
movies.com
sports.com
news.com

Web.com

Interland just bought web.com for about $4 million. Actually, they bought the hosting company that owned Web.com, but given the number of accounts involved, it looks like the domain accounts for at least half the value of the deal.

Clarification - the sale of Sex.com was for the entire web site ... no way to break out the cost of the domain, so it doesn't apply.

Yeah, it was the entire web site that sold for $14M. In addition, Kremen (the seller) got a share in the new Sex.com site. Otherwise the sales price would have been even higher, of course.

Anyway, the actual value of Sex.com is higher than an amount in the low eight-figure range, in my opinion. This domain is probably one of the most valuable domains on the Internet.

There's a nice article on the convoluted history of the Sex.Com domain in the Feb 2006 issue of Playboy. (I only buy it for the pictures.)

Yes, there's quite a few. I'd say that the .COM of any marketable industry (eg. cars.com, cellphones.com, computers.com, television.com) would be worth well over 1M.

That just changes the whole meaning of this thread, thanks for the info.

Jeremy, wasn't Blog Herald sold a few weeks ago? Or the deal didn't go through? I can't find anything about 'aborting' the deal..

Just went by the site for the first time. (Talk about a Not Safe For Work homepage!) It wasn't as nice as I expected it to be, though.
