Arrow GoogleTalk to Release on Wednesday

According to this article at MSNBC, and a few other articles I have seen, Google is about to launch its next big thing tomorrow. It is amazing how fast Google is growing now!

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9050519/

Quote:
Google Inc. is set to introduce its own instant messaging system, the Los Angeles Times reported on Tuesday, marking the expansion by the Web search leader into not just text but also voice communications.

Citing unnamed sources "familiar with the service," the Los Angeles Times said that Google's Instant Messaging program would be called Google Talk and could be launched as early as Wednesday.
EDIT:
It has now been released. You can visit it at:

Can't wait...

- Here's how to connect using a Jabber enabled client - http://www.smashsworld.com/2005/08/i...-right-now.php.

- There is also some screen shots at http://www.downloadsquad.com/2005/08...e-talk-review/.

I hope we can get the download soon for the official client

So I am wondering if they are going to do something similar to Gmail and make it by invite only or just make it a public beta where anyone can use it. It is also going to be interesting to see how long they keep it in beta since they tend to keep things in beta for quite some time

Heh, well as if now, you use your GMail Login Details to login to the server... so it might just be that you have to have a GMail account. My guess is as good as yours....

I guess we will just have to wait for an insider or until it is released

Ah true, that would make since since they seem to be sort of building a Google Network with your Gmail account. Although, they could always limit your Gmail username so you can't get GoogleTalk until you get invited. But yes, we will just need to wait and see.

Well I just downloaded it and it is plainly obvious they still have a lot of work to do. Seems to be the bare bones of the program right now. I haven't been able to test out the actual message screen yet since nobody is online yet however.

Ive been using it for a few hours. Looks pretty good but the main contact window is rather lame. It also doesnt have emoticons.

The VoIP is really good. Good lag time and sound quality. I think its time for a blog entry....

hmm

This thing is awesome. I know it doesn't have as much features as msn or aim, but still, simplicity. Perfect for business use.

Yes, that is true. I am finding some cool features I like. If they just add some others I might actually get all my friends to use it and start using it more.

Ha, already found a few bugs. But after all, it is the first release of beta, so that is to be expected.

Well, with friends, you tend to talk a lot less ... professional :P, so you'll need smilies and stuff. And be able to set wierd screen names. I'd stick with MSN for chatting with friends because of all the other features.

Yes, and if they want to get a big audience they need all those things that make the other IMs so popular. I just tried out the calling system with a friend and it works fairly well, didn't have any lag and it was very clear. You can even put people on hold I have never used a VoIP software like Skype so don't make fun of me if hold is nothing special! Haha

It is very nice, very smooth, very simple. And it works on Gaim, but I will be using the original client. If I could add MSN and AIM to this client I would be SO HAPPY!

I may download it soon, if it proves that many people begin using it. Google is the new Microsoft.
