Hmm, so two nasty (in my opinion) ad networks are effectively joining together.. so does this mean I'll have to add more rules to my Firefox adblock extension?

Both fastclick and valueclick never have and never will make money out of me, simply because I consider them as representing the sleazier side of online advertising.

Hope they don't mess up Fastclick. When they took over ClickAgents they closed it down and when they took over CJ - if I remember rightly - they had problems moving to a different database server.

Well I know Valueclick regretted the changes made to their affiliate program way back when. Someone from the company posted on my forums that they limited it like FastClick just announced and it effectively killed the program.

So perhaps they'll undo FastClick's recent accouncement.

I would imagine that maybe the reason Fastclick did it is maybe to make their company more appealing for the sale. Who knows though.

Well well well. I think just to be safe I'll probably shift over and swap FastClick for Casale in my chain within the next month.

Valueclick was never a good earner for me but their staff is the best in the biz IMO. Very courteous and eager to help. Pretty much the exact opposite of FC.

Yea I'm thinking either that or maybe Valueclick may have recommended it despite what has been said in the public.

Because FC has said nothing but "we are working on it" and now this announcement. Which I'm sure they knew was coming. But now I would suspect we will hear "we have to wait for ValueClick to make the call". And ValueClick never regretted their referral program changes so much to consider brining it back. (At least they had not brought it back prior to my no longer using them.) So I suspect after all the lip service FC will stick to their changed plan and eventually kill the referral program. All just my thoughts of course. But so far the actions are leading me to that conclusion.

I figure it would have been pretty easy for FC to put things right with the referral program and have a grandfather clause if that was something they really wanted to do.

in my opinion its all been planned when they got the venture capital.
look at this, their CEO was the CFO of valueclick.

http://www.fastclick.com/co_board.html
before becoming CEO in March 2004.Prior to joining Fastclick, Kurt was the Chief Financial Officer for ValueClick, Inc. (NASDAQ: VCLK)

FC had been a leader and lost it by the time that guy became CEO. But his getting in probably did give them contacts to help facilitate the sale to ValueClick.

Maybe he's the one who said "hey I know a great way to save money, you know that referral program..."??

The IPO may be what was really "planned"

I think the one thing planned in all this may have been the IPO for FC. Because they went public, the stock went down below the IPO price and now Valueclick is buying them at a discount. So FC got the additional capital from the IPO, then ValueClick buys them cheap.

All the while the regular investors still have not made their initial investment back and the folks at FC make money since I'm sure their strike price was lower.

What a play .....

See post by Valueclick employee from my forum:

About 2 years ago, ValueClick Media made this same move and effectively killed our referral program in the process. We would love to get some publishers back into our referral program. We have changed the program to have negotiable payment terms (percentages and duration). If anyone is interested in setting up a referral program with ValueClick feel free to contact us through htmlhelp@valueclick.com. Be sure to include 'vclk' in the subject line.

Alternatively, you can leave me a voice mail at 818.575.4623. I’ll be out of the office next week but will get you hooked up with the right people when I get back.

What's the URL to the post? I searched but couldn't find it (to see if they said anything else).

Doesn't Valueclick have their own ad network?

Valueclick also owns CJ, and I don't remember any significant changes when they acquired them.

I am still amazed to find that ValueClick is buying FastClick. Boy how times have changed. I would think they would either phase out FastClick or directly integrate it into ValueClick's system. It makes no sense to compete against your own company.

Well, I hope they don't change much with FastClick as I am earning some nice money from it.

I have only just received my first check and I hope to see more.
