Ahahahaha. I wonder if this is Google or PageRank.net messing it up. It could be Google screwing with the requests from pagerank.net -- or it could just be a programming glitch on pagerank.net's side.

I'm figuring it's just a glitch on pagerank.net's side. It's pretty unlikely imho that Google would try messing with another company instead of just telling them to stop using the PR checker.

If this is still around tomorrow, people will be selling text links "I HAVE A PR67, ONLY $30/MONTH!"

I love speculation. These people obviously fail to realize that even if toolbar PR disappears, internal PR is still going to be used. They didn't spend all that time and money on that algorithm just to can it. On top of that, the person's saying we need to rethink our linkbuilding ideas -- when in fact, links will NEVER be bad.

From a guy at DigitalPoint:

Quote:
I have theorized that the 302 redirect affects even those not caught in it; it causes links from those caught to be discounted as non-existent or of less importance. I figured when it came time to fix it, they would have to totally dump and recalculate. I think we are seeing the dump.
I think that's so far the best explanation I've seen for it. Who knows what's going on. Interesting, though.

Oh and the next best:

On the other hand, its also possible that the google engineers were bored and looking for something to do this weekend, so they shut down the PR servers as a practical joke and are reading all these threads and laughing.

Wow, can't believe PR is probably getting pushed off, guess it's cause I'm a noob to PR.

EDIT: Do you all think SERPs will change drastically?

Its not only pagerank.net. I'm getting this when I'm using Opera PR plugin:

Forbidden
Your client does not have permission to get URL /search?client=navclient-auto&ch=6-36093668&features=Rank&q=info:http%3A//www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php%3Ft%3D267321 from this server.

I hope this is not a glitch on google. I think without PR it will be better for everyone.

I have to admit that if they do dump visual PR, i'm going to miss that cute little green bar. Long Live the Little Green PR Bar!

Since the PR graphic is still being displayed in the Google directory, I suspect that PR is still alive and fine, however, Google may have decided to turn of access to PR data to the google toolbar and similar tools.

It was under the impression the PR in the directory was calculated differently... or at least has a different scale. Do we know how closely the 2 are related? They don't seem to match up very well to the sites I follow.

From what I know, they have a different scale, but it's the same algorithm. It's all PageRank in the end.

Well, Google.com has width=38 for the green image, and Frogole is 32. I have a width=16, and I had a PR5 on the toolbar. The height is 4, so assuming they're in square blocks, that's a directory PR of 4, and Google.com's would be 9.5, and Froogle an 8.
