>> I personally believe we have a viable 'Linux' desktop in OS X, which will only become of real value if and when Apple releases a sub-$500 desktop box.

Don't you love it when you get the things you ask for?

I think he was quoting the article and responding saying that he (the author) got his wish with the Mac Mini

It was a good article. You also have Open Source online software such as WordPress, phpMyAdmin, and osCommerce.

Hm. No mention at all of Firefox? Breaking 20 million downloads, the huge ad in the NY Times, now rated at around 5% (and rising) of overall browser usage... I would think it would at least deserve honourable mention, especially here at SitePoint. ;)

Dont forget thunderbird ! What a good app there. I had a little rocky start but support is cheap and I did fix. Pretty good work for those who are claiming it as version 1.0 :) 2005 should be a good year at mozilla and I wish them the best.

I think there should be a mention of the increasing quaility of open source CMS'es such as Plone. Plone went 2.0 in 2004 and surpassed any LAMP-based solution in usability and quality.

Absolutely Firefox was huge - however - with the front page coverage it received it was also obvious - I was trying to pick up on some of the more subtle but critical events in this piece.
