I lost (myname).com to redemption. Put it to the back of my mind because I have a pretty uncommon name. 4 Months later some guy wants $1,300 for (myname).com.

Hello all,

Well this is a rather long story so I will try and keep it as short as possible.

I have had a lot of sleepless nights with my previous hosting company in fact to put it mildly they are the biggest load of morons I have ever had the misfortune of meeting! AVOID Hosting Company at all costs!!

I canceled my subscription with them after endless downtime sometimes (2-3) days at a time. What pushed me over the edge was on the last occasion their servers were infected which led to worms being sent out to anyone that visited the site. As you can imagine the business implications on my part were enormous! I was a 3year customer with them and to be treated the way I was this past 12 months is utterly disgusting.

Furthermore I then realised that they had registered my domain name in THEIR name! NOT mine! To obviously have a stronghold over their customers!!!!!! I emailed & phoned them with regard to releasing my domain name. Even lowered myself to request the fees in order to make it happen (after they infected most of my clients with a deadly worm virus) a total of 50 attempts to communicate with them failed! (yes you would of thought someone would of replied) ! NOTHING from their "Award Winning Support"!

So now according to the whois database they are supposed to release the domain name 40 days after it has expired.

Info as follows:

Quote
Expiry Date: 26-Sep-2005
Days Left for Expiry: -39
Record Creation Date: 26-Sep-2004
Domain Status: RenewalHold

Today I find out that this has now switched to the "redemptionhold" period. Yet another 30 days according to the whois info. I am concerned after reading this thread that I will now lose my domain because of the hijacker companies as you guys have experienced above.

My domain is still registered in their name! I have lost clients and 40 days of potential business due to their negiglence and moronic support! So I have to build my business back up from scratch but this is no easy task without your DOMAIN name.

Any advice would be greatly received at this point! What are my chances getting this domain back? Should i create a new domain name for myself ? I really don't want to do this but it would be possible to shorten my company name so it still meant the same thing.

Hi jasper1106,

Since the domain in question has entered redemption period, there's a good chance that the name will be dropped from the registry. What I would suggest doing, is getting an account with pool.com and snapnames.com. Both of these companies have high success rates at "catching" a domain name as it drops. Both are also free to use, and only charge you if they are successful at acquiring the domain for you. Also, contrary to popular belief, a domain's redemption period can actually last up to 75 days.

In the mean time, I would continue contacting your hosting provider and trying to get them to renew the domain name in your name. Do they not have a telephone number?

Look them up at:

"every time he'd contacted Network Solutions (and he'd spent several hours on the phone with them) he'd been told the same story"

Network Solutions have the worst support of any online company I've ever met and should be avoided like the plague. Some of the staff may sound friendly, but they are totally useless in achieving anything. In one week recently when I had problems accessing a critical domain of mine, I had to spend nearly 20 hours on the phone to them. They are so bureacratic it's unbelievable.

I could not agree with you more. My dad used to own this business that held a certain domain name. The business no longer exists, so I tried to contact Nutwork (no)Solutions and tried to change the registration info to my dad's personal info. Since that couldn't be done without me being a contact on the name, (my dad is though), I had to provide a notarized form with who he was, his drivers license, and a bill in his name to get the email changed on one of the domain contacts. After so much more of this process, they still kept adding more rules and hoops to jump through. I've decided to take a break from it all until I can find someone over there who can actually help me accomplish the process of changing over the owner to my dad's current status. (The problem started when my dad's old email address no longer existed.) At least we still have some time to get this fixed somehow.

Oh, and I also could not calculate the number of hours of my life that I have already wasted trying to get this changed. It sickens me to think about it even now.

Almost 2 years old, and still a problem, imho.
If you are a domainer or internet pro, check out http://www.dnoa.org , the Domain Name Owner's Association. Created by the owner of NP as a lobbying organization to represent the interest of domain name owners.

I think concerned registrar is not paying any attention to the domain and will not pay any attention as he is least bothered about such domains. In this situation present status will continue....

This is why I stipulate in my contract who's responsibility it is to renew the domain.
