Thank you for this information. I'm searching tech sites and links on them to learn, learn, learn. I am newly A+ certified, but I still have much to learn. This was a informative practical application article. - Lorraine Witcosky

It's always interesting to use the Waybackmachine (www.archive.org) to see what it was used for.

I also recommend checking the domain on google and check googles newsgroup archive as well.

People don't build businesses on expired domains. They use traffic to earn ppc revenue.
Nothing to worry about.

It's interesting to note that the expired domain industry has evolved several times over since July of '03.

I think even though the domain name industry has evolved since 03, this article is still usefull for us.

Note: This article is for people who want to build their business, not domain name speculators.

This is all still very true. Domains should be fully researched prior to registration. There are a few websites that give all of this information, and it is well worth the time and expense to learn ahead of time about expired domains, rather than to purchase one, optimize it and then find that it was all done in veign. Try http://www.DropWatch.com a very complete set of tools to research expired domains and expiring domains, and a great place to find just the right name for your online presence.

Just so you all know - DropWatch is a FEE Service - and domainut, aka Sid, is the owner.

There are other sites out there that provide statistical information on expiring domains for FREE.

Quite an interesting article. Banned domains probably isn't something that most buyers think about, but it definately is a real concern that should be addressed before buying.

Research the owner

Did he or she own just one domain name or one thousand? Be wary of owners who control huge numbers of domain names. It's likely they're either speculators or spammers who inter-link their sites in an effort to boost link popularity and confuse search engine algorithms.
Ummm... interlinking your sites does not equal spam. The owner can have just one site and still spam the search engines with thousands of invisible meaningless links. Or the owner can have 500 sites, some interlinked, and not spam the search engines once.

Also, getting Google to lift the ban isn't that difficult. I have applied twice and the sites were indexed within a few weeks.

I was thinking of buying some expired domains, but now I think I will first check if they are banned. Thanks for the article.

I second the use of the wayback machine. Expired domain lists are good places to look if you're interested in getting a .com name. The .com domain is the original and it is very difficult to come up with a useful new .com name but it is possible to come across some very good ones among expired domains.

Whenever I find one that I'm interested in, I check the Wayback Machine to see what use it was put to before. I also do a search for the url in google and yahoo. If it looks like it had a spammy history it is better off being left alone.
