I wouldn't want to have to climb the stairs to a room near the top of the Burj Dubai - UAE if the lifts ever broke down. There was one skyscraper, the Empire State Building I think, that had an annual race to climb the central staircase.

Apparently the Burj Dubai is so tall that it prompted new inventions in civil engineering - it's so heavy that research had to be made into concrete that could put up with so much weight (at the bottom). Also new equipment to pump concrete that high up had to be developed. It's a pretty impressive sight, the sort of thing I'd see in depictions of futuristic cities, particularly the way it's made up of lots of cylinders piled together in a higgledy-piggledy sort of manner.

I can't say I like Taipei 101 much, it's pretty brutally ugly.

I remember in the WTC on the observation floor, at the edge you had a glass floor which came out from the side enough that you could look straight down the side of the building.
