ROSE SAGA-Rose Precursor-ALL

Rose Saga

Rose Precursor

Episode 1:: Now It Begins

It is the middle of winter in The Great City, rain falls heavily in the streets, and the wings blow fiercely through the trees. In a small red brick house on 13th Street, a young girl lies snug in her bed. She is awakened to the sounds of footsteps and voices downstairs. She slowly rises out of bed and walks to her door. The Victorian-style house is extremely dark, and she nearly knocks a vase off a small end table on her way to the stairs.

She heads halfway down the twisting stairs, and peers out between two of the wrought iron bars that once held up a banister. She sees her father, a small man who has aged far beyond his years in order to support his family, standing in front of two very large men.

“Please, I said I’ll pay you the money, just don’t hurt my family!” his pleas fall on deaf ears, and one of the men kicks the back of his leg, sending him to his knees.

“The boss is tired of waiting, he wants to make sure people understand that when he demands payment, he expects be paid” with that, the second man pulls out a pistol and shoots him in the head, as the first man begins trailing gasoline throughout the house.

The young girl stands horrified, then dashes towards her father “Daddy, no!!” One of the men shoots at her, Hitting her in the arm, and she runs out the front door, she doesn’t look where she is running, she just runs until her legs collapse out from under her.

She is far from her home, in the slums of downtown, sirens wail in the distance, and gunshots can be heard from every direction. She stumbles into an alley and breaks down crying.

“Well, well, what do we have here?”

“I don’t know, but she sure looks like fun.” A group of teenage boys emerges from the shadows and approaches her. She tries to run, but one of the boys throws her to the ground.

“Don’t worry, this won’t hurt, much.” One of the boys begins to cut off her shirt as another holds her; there is nothing she can do.

After removing her shirt, one of the boys holds her down as another begins to rip away underpants (she wears an oversized shirt and undergarments).

“Enough!” A gunshot rings out and the boy in front of her looks down to see a massive exit wound in his chest, the bullet strikes within inches of her face.

“Get away from her, as the boy speaks, the others back away, one covers her with a blanket.

“I’m really sorry about what happened back there, sometimes they get out of hand. My name is John”

He slides a cup of tea across the table to the girl, who sits wrapped in a blanket. “Why don’t you stay here for awhile, I’ll prepare you a room.” He escorts the girl, still in too much shock to show any response, to a small, dank room. “It aint much, but it’s home”

Episode 2:: A new Home

The little girl sits on the edge on the four-poster bed, still unresponsive. It has been three days since her father was killed and John took her in. She hears John coming down the hall; the floors terrible squeaking gives him away every time. He silently enters the room and places a plate of moldy food on the bed, it is all they have. She waits until he has left the room, and quickly devours the meal, ignoring the stinging sensation in the back of her mouth caused by the mold.

After waiting several minutes, to ensure she could maintain from throwing up, she slides off the bed and peers out the door, John and the others are drinking and playing cards in a room down the hall. She makes sure no-one is looking and dashes to the kitchen, that small plate of moldy food was all she had eaten since her father had been shot.

She rips open the cabinets and eats what food she can find; the hunger hurts too much. She turns around to see John standing behind her, and quickly tries to apologize through her mouth full of bread.

“It’s okay, I was wondering if you were going to eat anything.” He guides back to her room and takes out a small med kit, “How’s the arm?” seeing the confusion in her eyes he clarifies, “The bullet wound.”

“It’s okay” she replies, unsure how to answer. “Well, we’re gonna have to change that bandage, or it could get infected.” He slowly removes the wrapping from her arm and, holding her arm as to prevent her from moving it, pours vodka onto it from a nearby bottle.

“I know, should probably use rubbing alcohol, but this is all we got”, his light smile is a welcome change after the last few days’ events.

“There, all done” he finishes securing the new bandage and takes a large swig from the vodka bottle. “What do ya say you go meet the guys, huh?” Seeing the look on her ace he is quick to comfort her, “Look, if they try anything, I’ll shoot ‘em, okay? I promise you, you’re perfectly safe with me around.”

He takes her hand and walks her down to the other room. “Guys, meet, well, actually, I never did catch your name.” “Rose, my name is Rose.” she replies weakly.

“Guys meet Rose, Rose, the guys. There’s Frank, pretty useless, but funny as hell. Then there’s Bull, puts on a tough exterior, but read him some poetry, and he’s out. Useless pansy *******.” He laughs lightly, and Rose suddenly feels safe, not only safe, but at home, even.

“Then we got Ken, an amazing shot, and er, hey, what’s your name again?” “It’s Bob you dumbass, try to remember it for more than ten minutes this time.”

Rose can’t help but smile, the way they get along, despite moldy food, terrible living conditions, no money, and nothing but the clothes on their backs and the guns in their pants, their still happy. Even more, they had gone through so much to make her comfortable, even giving her what was obviously the only room with any privacy, and the only bed with any padding left.

It is no Victorian dream house, but it is home, her new home.

Episode 3:: Cold Alliance

Rose sits at the edge of her bed, throwing some old playing cards into a trash can as she waits for time to go by. Suddenly the door explodes open and John dashes towards her.

“What’s the bug hurry, someone chasin’ ya with a chainsaw or somethin’?” She turns to see him, his eyes are wide and he is sweating profusely.

“How you feel about ribs for dinner?” He speaks quickly, and Rose can barely understand what he is saying.

“What?” before the words have even left her mouth he is explaining, “We just got news that a bank van is broke down about a mile from here, we talked with the Black Zombies, and they agreed to help us rob it.”

“Who, what?” “The Black Zombies, gang from the west docks, about three miles west of here. Point is, this is our ticket to all the money we need!”

“Sure” She grabs a gun out of the hallway table and follows john to the living room.

“Hey guys Rose’s gonna join us for this”. “Are you sure she can handle it?” “No, Bull, I’m not. But then again, I seem to remember you in a fetal position the first time YOU were shot at.”

*Scene change*

They arrive at a small building near some docks, Rose can barely stand, she’d never walked this far before. “Okay, stand back” John knocks on a blacked out window three times, and a well hidden door behind an old mattress slowly opens.

“Welcome John, and who is this?” A man of about twenty walks towards Rose, his hand outstretched, and his face, covered in glow in the dark paint, twisted into a smile that makes him look like he should be in a psych ward.

“That, is Rose, and she’s not your little toy, so lay off.” Rose turns bright red, she can’t help it, the way John stands up for her.

“Very well then, al business tonight.” He removes a sheet to reveal a hole in the wall; there are a van and several motorcycles in the other room. “She can ride with me.”

“How ‘bout not. Rose, We’ll take the van, Best save the bikes for later.” He opens the van door, and Rose quickly gets in and sits on the floor, as there are no seats.

John gets in after her, and another member of the other gang, this one in all orange, gets behind the steering wheel.

“Who was that guy” Rose tries to speak as clearly as possible, but the old van smells of mold, and she can barely breathe.

“That, that’s Mummy, weird son of a *****, but nothing to worry about.” He reaches into a bag he brought along and hands her a respirator from it, “here, this’ll help. Don’t worry, you get used the smell.”

*Scene change*

The van comes to a sudden stop, and John jumps out of the van, AK-M in hand. “Stay here, don’t wanna get hurt, do ya?” He rushes the bank van with the others, and forces the guard to open the back.

After the bank van is emptied, they pile the money in the back and drive off, throwing the tracking devices out the windows as they find them. “We must have three thousand here at least, more than enough for a new place.”

They arrive back at the Black Zombies’ hideout and start counting the money. “…One thousand five-hundred, two thousand.” Suddenly John pulls out his gun and begins firing at the other gang, Bull quickly joins in, and, before she knows it, Rose is caught in the crossfire. She ducks behind some toolboxes, and waits for the firing gunfire to stop.

*Several minutes later”

“Alright, who’s not dead?” Despite her anger over being shot at, Rose can’t help but feel overwhelming joy at the sound of his voice. It does not last though.

“What the hell is wrong with you?! They were on our side!” Rose tries to continue, but she can barely talk through the tears.

“Listen, listen, Rose, listen to me.” He sits her down in an old chair, “Listen Rose, this was what we call a cold alliance, we never liked them, we were just using them to get what we needed. Do you understand?” Rose storms out into the steeds, and collapses to her knees in tears.

“Well, THAT went well.”

‘Shut-up Bull! I don’t need you **** right now!” He sits in a corner and holds his head in his hands. This was not going well, not well at all.

*Scene Change*

Rose sits on an old wooden crate in the middle of the alley behind the house; John walks up from behind her and sits next to her, trying to comfort her.

“All I want to know is why, why’d you have to kill them?” She wipes the tears from her eyes and stares at him, face to face, eye to eye.

“Look Rose, listen. I’d worked with Mummy before, he used to a part of this gang. We kicked him out after he killed three of our best, and nearly killed me and Bull. He couldn’t be trusted. I had no choice. Rose, please forgive me, you weren’t supposed to see that, you were supposed to be lead outside by the time the gunfire started.”

As John starts to leave, Rose pulls a gun from her coat and shoots him in the shoulder, she was aiming for his heart, but it’s hard to aim when you’re crying.

“What the hell is wrong with you?!”

“How’s it feel John, being shot when you lest expect it? What makes you think I need you, huh? I can survive here without you.” She knows she is lying, but she doesn’t care “Just consider this… consider this a cold alliance.” She fires again, but misses him completely. She quickly head inside and locks herself in her room. She collapses onto her bead and cries into the old, faded pillow.

“That *****…that ****ing *****.” John smiles lightly and laughs to himself, “She learned faster than I expected, this is gonna be one hell of a ride.”

…To be continued.
