Flash 6 compression info (?)

Hello all,

Basically, i'm looking for some specifics on what Flash MX/6 does to compress SWFs when the "compress" checkbox is checked during the export movie process. I'm just curious as to how this option achieves the filesize reduction it does.

I'm just trying to pitch the implementation of the Flash 6 player for an upcoming project, and I have the file-size improvement figures (i've noticed about a 25% to 35% improvement) and how that will affect download times, etc etc...but i'd love to be able to back that up with some information as to what Flash is actually doing to knock off that much file-size. These are *really* straight-forward animations...linear, no actionscripting, no video or sound. Just weird that I can't find any information

I've searched up and down across the web (and Macromedia's site) for some specifics about this, but could find none. I have only found mention of the zLib Compression that is used...but again...nothing to tell me what exactly this does to the file.

I did find this link to the zLib site for developers: http://www.gzip.org/zlib/

But again, nothing specific to it's implementation within FlashMX.

If anyone can point me to any sites or white papers, it would be MUCH appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Tim
