Sherlock Holmes Granted Honorary Fellowship by Royal Society of Chemistry.

The first fictional character to be granted an honorary fellowship by Britain's Royal Society of Chemistry!

On Wednesday, the Royal Society of Chemistry recognized the contribution to forensic science made by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective with a coveted honorary fellowship -- the first time a fictional character has been honored.

"Sherlock Holmes was way beyond his time in using chemistry and chemical sciences as a means of cracking crime," said John Watson, a fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and namesake of Holmes' doctor friend.

"Many years ago Holmes was using what would one day be forensic science in detection. Thanks to this science today, more crimes are solved than ever before," Watson said in bestowing the honor at a ceremony at the statue of the sleuth outside Baker Street subway station in London.

The honor marks the centenary of Holmes' most celebrated case, "The Hound of the Baskervilles," as well as the 100th anniversary of Conan Doyle's knighthood.

Well I checked three different sites and came up with the same thing. Maybe CNN's error. Wouldn't be the first time.

If it is an error it is AP(Associated Press)'s error. Not CNN's.

They do realise Sherlock Holmes was a druggy?

He injects cocaine in at least one book, and for enjoyment, not in the interests of a case.

The character of Sherlock Holmes was originally written to have a well-developed Opium addiction which was initiated from earlier travels in the Far East (I think).
It was written that he liked to 'chase the dragon' of an evening in order to free his mind of the burdens of his cases and also to help excercise other parts of his brain that would help him in his work.
It was also written in some darker passages that Holmes himself felt that he could not function on a day to day basis without first having a hit of Opium.

Some of the original short stories and characterisation mentioned this, but of course this side of his character has mostly been air-brushed out for the sake of popularity.

There has been some movement towards using some of these original characteristics in recent portrayals seeing as such things are now more palatable.

(It's amazing the kinds of trivial knowledge you can pick up when recuperating from an injury. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it)
