This has been proved these past 2 weeks as my corner of the world ducks behind trash cans, avoids gas stations and observantly looks around for white 'box' trucks that may be the transportation method of the Washington area's infamous Serial Sniper. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those innocent victims, and we all hope that the authorities will nab this guy soon -- at least so I can stop thinking about how they solved the serial killings in 'that one movie'. We also want to extend a warm congratulations to SitePoint Forum's new promotees. At the writing of this edition of the Crier, M. Johannson, iFroggy, moospot, platinum, Sarah and dhtmlgod have all been promoted to Advisor status, while Ingoal has been made the newest Mentor. Congratulations -- all promotions were well earned, ladies and getlemen. This edition of the Crier will bring you a teaser to a great new article on the SitePoint Network, regarding successful client acquisition. Also find out how you can eliminate spyware on your Windows system, plus much more. So we invite you to kick back, grab a Mocha Java, Twinkie or Tim Tam, and enjoy this issue of the Crier! For any one job, you might compete with other freelancers, small Web design firms, and even larger interactive agencies. So how can you make sure your quote or proposal wins the job? The New Rules for Quoting My advice for quoting is this: never, ever charge by how long it will take. Don't charge by how skilled you are. And certainly don't charge less than the competition. Charge more -- usually lots more. I base my charges on how much I think the client will pay. We win 95% of all the jobs for which we pitch, and I can just about guarantee we're the most expensive every time. Why? Well, the key to quoting is to realize this: clients won't assess you on your skill or programming level. They won't assess you on your creative genius, or even on your design ability. They usually don't have the technical expertise to objectively judge that stuff anyway. The only thing the client is interested in is: can you do the job? And, more importantly: is contracting you as the designer going to be less risky than using someone else? How To Win With a Higher Quote We won a job a couple of weeks ago for $17,000. We were up against two other designers. The other quotes were for $3,000 and $3,500. So why did we get the job? Are we better qualified? No. Would we finish the site quicker? No. Are we better designers? Probably not. Do we live closer to the client? Nope. Is the client my dad? Good question, but no! I'll go through what we did so you can see exactly why we got the job and continue to get jobs at a premium price... Sarah: My sister stated up her own business (in 1999) and I told her to get a Website as everyone seemed to have one. We had one made by a friend of a friend but it gave us a lot of problems, so I said "give me a weekend and I'll see what I can do." I bought a Web page magazine with a free copy of Hotdog, Paint Shop Pro, an HTML book and away I went. Within a weekend we had a working Website that suited our needs and I was hooked (http://www.lizlabel.co.uk). SP: How did you come across SitePoint? Sarah: I was so hooked, that I packed in my job in the oil industry and got a job as a Web developer. I had only created that one site and was very green, I used to frequent the Hotdog Website to get help on questions and such, and ended up being directed to SitePoint - where I have to say I never left! The tutorials and the forums where such a great help that 1.5 years into my job my boss is amazed at how much I know. SP: What are you up to at the moment? Sarah: In work I have just completed a customer area for my sister's company which is live as we speak, all written in PHP with MySQL. I also have 2 other projects using PHP and MySQL and also one possibly in ASP (which I am trying to learn!). At home I am setting up ecommerce site for the Liz Label, and I also have a few more ideas going on. SP: Do you have any interests (apart from SitePoint of course!)? Sarah: I am an avid gym and sports person, so if I'm not working on my computer I'm at the gym doing the latest funky workout. I also love books and so can quite happily while away the hours curled up reading. I also have two hyper nephews that demand lots of attention from their favourite Aunty - how can I refuse..? SP: What is your favorite movie of all time? Sarah: I don't think that I can choose one as it depends on my mood. I love all Disney films, musicals and action adventure and horror films as well. The one that made the most impression is probably Jaws, although give me any Rocky film and I'm happy. SP:...and book? Sarah: Well I think it would have to be 'Gone with the Wind' as it makes me laugh and cry, although I haven't finished it in about 5 years as I find the ending very upsetting. SP:...same goes for song? Sarah: My music loves are far and wide but if I had to choose one then it would be 'Summertime' by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, that song makes the hair on my neck stand on end! SP: If you could only visit one Website today (apart from SitePoint of course), which would it be? Sarah: Amazon. I am addicted to it and truly believe that I vastly helped towards them making a profit. ADVERTISING INFORMATION - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - I Caught You Reading An Ezine Ad! Cut and paste the list SitePoint Forums Mentor Ingoal provides at <http://www.sitepointforums.com/showt...ight=great+tip> into your 'hosts' file.
