Promote, promote, promote............
Take out some ads, post on forums, and then do it again. Get your name out and about. |

I honeslty can't say, for the most part you're doing better than I did
so I don't think i am one to advice, but I guess the best thing really is just constant promotion, and constantly adding content. |

Im in the same position as you. I am consistantly getting new members, and forum is slowly growing but how do I make it increase at a faster rate? How do I get more online users at a time/per day?
I think the answer is to promote now and drive traffic. You have an established forum with interesting discussion. People have a reason to signup. So all you need to do now is get the word out and drive traffic. |

You just have to be totally relentless. Contact big sites and get them to cover you, issue press realeases via online distribution services, write articles, form alliances. It never ends...

Definitely falls into promotions. If there are larger forums in your niche, you may want to partner with them or try PPC ads.

kineda: Just a question - why would a larger competitor want to partner up with a smaller site?

Set aside a few hours a day to just promote. Where do your potential members already hang out on the internet? Join those communities and forums and become an active member. Post, post, post, and make sure you have a subtle but good signature that leads to your site.
Yahoo groups is a great, free place to find new members, as are any of the other "internet group" communities. In fact, posts on there will often arrive in members' email boxes. That's huge. |

Personally, I would never join another website to promote mine. This is just a tactic that seems wrong because I would not want someone to join my sites in order to drive traffic to their site.
But to answer the question, fresh, quality content seems to be the magic bullet. I have sites which bump around PR 6 and drop when I am not posting. For example, UMPC Buzz was receiving over 10,000 unique visitors a day but I stopped writing and so there is no reason for people to visit. After years of being online, Tablet Questions continues to receive new members in dribbles. I don't really promote the site, though. My best advice (remembering that free advice is just about worth that ...), is to stick with the content side of the formula and enjoy yourself. People can tell the difference between someone doing something for money versus doing a site out of enjoyment. |
