calendar control just like the blog sites

I am looking for a nice and compact calendar control to place on a website for showing an Events Calendar. Most of the javascript code I found was quite messy and not that neat.

For example, I am looking at a calendar at http://www.rittman.net/archives/000889.html which is quite nice. Not sure how it shows events though.

Do you have any suggestions on how can I implement this kind of similar simple, neat calendar to show upcoming events at my site using HTML/javascript or php only. Any help is appreciated.
