Berners-Lee on the Semantic Web & Search Engines
Right out front, I want to say that I work for the firm that hosts this site. I want to say this because I don't want to look like a spammer. I actually really want to know about something and I'm not trying to just promote a site.
With that all said: There's an interview that came out today in the ConsortiumInfo.org newsletter with Tim Berners Lee about the Semantic Web. While reading the interview, one thing caught my eye that I didn't really understand: Talking about search engines and the semantic web, Berners-Lee says: "It's about the ability to use and reuse vast volumes of data. Yes, Google can claim to index billions of pages, but given the format of those diverse pages, there may not be a whole lot more the search engine tool can reliably do." So that leaves me wondering: will the Googles of the world fade out or be forced to change their whole model if the semantic web catches on? What kind of changes will have to be made by webmasters if the Semantic Web becomes the norm? I admit, I've tried to go through the tutorials on W3Cs site about RDF and the semantic web, and I've just said to myself "Huh? I think I'll wait on this stuff." Focus: What are your thoughts on the Semantic Web? Will there be monumental changes in the way we all do our jobs? |
