Bandwith/Data Transfer rate - is this right ?
Hi there - sorry if this appears as a really simple question, but this is my first venture into web hosting and i wanted to make sure i've got it right before i sign on the dotted line.
I'm looking for a starter package to host a small website - its a site for a District netball team. Although a fair few people will look at it weekly for results, etc.. i doubt it will get un-indated with hits. I've been looking at a few web hosting companies packages and it seems you can choose from one of two levels. For e.g. SupaNames and 123reg.co.uk offer their packages with between 2000 - 3000mb per month data transfer (2,000mb of data transfer is enough for approximately 30,000 visits they say). Whereas oneandone say their starter package comes with 10 GB/month bandwidth. Now that seems a huge difference between the two - is there something i'm missing here ? Would the bandwith/data transfer include me uploading stuff to the site as well ? And just so i sound a complete novice - bandwith/data transfer - that is the same thing, right ? TIA |

Hi Tia,
have just replied to your questions in the order you asked ,Well it depends on the size of your webpages, for most of my webpages, they are about 20k in size so thats:50,000 hits per 1000mb however most people read several pages so an estimate of 30,000 visitors is fair. No theres not really, some hosts target people that require more bandwidth, or they offer more as they are able to get it cheaper than others, but really if you are running a District Netball site getting 10gb bandwidth/month is a bit superflous, im sure you would be happy with 2gb and even then i would say you are unlikely to use all of that. (from my experience. Yes Bandwidth and transfer are the same thing, uploading stuff to their site will count as your bandwidth. I hoped that helped, if you need a quote on some hosting for your needs you can email me at hostingsolutions@gmail.com or check out ahchuhosting.com |

" I believe TIA stands for Thanks In Advance! Not their name ..." so it does lol, i just copied and pasted the message and i guess it ended at the top of my reply so i thought that was their name, sorry about that 'Faerun' hope didn't offend.
Yea about overselling that was what i was meaning about some getting cheaper than others, if they sell 3000gb but really only have 2000gb they can sell for a cheaper price , anyway, comment noted about promotion, but yea hopefully Faerun has a better idea of what bandwidth/transfer is , |

Hi Guys - yes TIA (on this occassion at least) does stand for thanks in advance !
Thanks for your help - i am a clearer on data transfer now. Its also my own silly fault, as i had the MB - GB scale wrong in my head, for some reason i thought 2000mb was a lot smaller than it was....roll on friday ! But thanks again, much appreciated. Cheers Faerun |

Self promotion isn't allowed in these forums Ahchu.
It's true that different hosts target a different clientbase but you've got to be aware as well, some hosts do oversell their space/bandwidth. Meaning that they may be able to provide 2000gb data transfer but they sell 3000gb with the assumption that not all their customers will use their full allotment. Not all hosts are bad apples but just be careful, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is ![]() |
