Doorway pages?

A client of ours has about 250 web sites. About 240 of them are simply doorway pages linking to his important sites.

I don't know how well this is working for him, he says it is working great, but I'm not sure how much he knows about it. I'm no expert on SEO.

How effective are doorway pages? Could there be an alternative, such as URL Forwarding or Domain Aliases that would work just as well?

Reason is, we're going to move his sites to our server. Don't really want to have to setup 250 websites for him if they're not worthwhile and if there are other options. And the 10 websites he has aren't worth an entire dedicated server.

Whats your thought?

First off, nothing is more annoying than searching through the serps to be forced to go to the same spamming site for each result. I curse him for doing that .

Second - it's against Google's guidelines and sounds like a great candidate to get banned from Google.

Hmmm, interesting. I don't think I want to support this either. Didn't think it was considered spamming. Thanks for the information.

They are also not that effective because it is a waste of time to get incoming links for doorway pages and doorway pages won't rank too well without incoming links.

It's probably not a matter of obtaining higher PR or ranking for the main site, but just a matter a of getting a page high up with keyword density so they don't have to rely on optimizing their main site.
