I recently ran into a huge list of submission pages...so if your looking for a submission page, and it's not on this list, I somehow don't think it exists

Wow that is a huge list. I wonder if Aspen would want to sticky post it in the forum. I know there are basically only 3 SE's that matter, but it might be cool to try a few of these.

I have a .xls spreadsheet with it all, but that isn't one of the 'allowed' attachments otherwise I would have just attached it..

Filter out the ones that are just dinky PPCs with no traffic, and the ones that exist to just get your email address.

isedb.com does a fine job categorizing places to submit your site -- there is no need to reinvent the wheel.

really, that list is too broad. a good number of those sites will not be worth submitting to.

Thanks for asking. Yes, that is the idea. But in this case, the message is about 5 years old so many of those sites may no longer be valid. I would try to find a more current list if you want to submit your site...!

Does anyone really ever use these search engines? I can't imagine it's even worth the time to submit to them.

Some people do. but that's the whole problem isn't it? If people don't submit, the small directories can't grow and people don't use them. But if people submit, then the small directories have a chance to grow larger and be a better resource. But even if not many people use them, they still provide links to our sites which helps.

But if I list my website in a smaller search engine, how does that provide a backlink for me? It's not like Googlebot submits a form and performs a search to generate a SERP.

There are search engines and directories. Search engines index your site and store the information in their database. When someone (or something) requests information about your site, you appear in the listings. (Hint: you can save the URL that displays your site and post that somewhere and it will be found by spiders, who may or may not index the page and provide more chances to be found...)

Directories have a series of links that people (or spiders) can follow to your listing with them.

The larger search engines spider sites and follow links and most sites don't have to submit to them to be found. Small search engines may or may not spider, and if they don't, you won't be listed if you don't submit to them. There used to be a lot of these, but now there are not so many. Directories are much more popular.

You aren't looking for backlinks when you submit your site to search engines - you are trying to get the search engine themselves to list you in their search results. The big search engines run spiders across the web to find new sites themselves but the smaller ones only list you if someone tells them you exist.

Let's take one search engine as an example (let's call it Google for the sake of picking a name for it). Why would you expect that telling Google that your site exists and getting listed in their search results is going to generate backlinks for you that will affect how other search engines rank you in their results?

If people don't submit, the small directories can't grow and people don't use them. But if people submit, then the small directories have a chance to grow larger and be a better resource. But even if not many people use them, they still provide links to our sites which helps.

Search engines index your site and store the information in their database. When someone (or something) requests information about your site, you appear in the listings. (Hint: you can save the URL that displays your site and post that somewhere and it will be found by spiders, who may or may not index the page and provide more chances to be found...) Directories have a series of links that people (or spiders) can follow to your listing with them. The larger search engines spider sites and follow links and most sites don't have to submit to them to be found. Small search engines may or may not spider, and if they don't, you won't be listed if you don't submit to them. There used to be a lot of these, but now there are not so many. Directories are much more popular.
