[RFC] Categorizing Useful Posting Information
Okay, so recently I had been working on some General Posting Guidelines:
http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/show...2&postcount=37 to provide a way for users to create more meaningful posts. Then I was thinking about further information, including tutorials on basic debugging methods to help people with solving basic problems that simply require something such as pulling up the Error Console in Firefox. However, with the large amount of technologies that the Sitepoint Forums deal with, I was worried there might be "information overload" so to speak. So that said, I sat down and pondered over some basic issues. The first one that came to mind was the usage of "stickies". While stickies create a great way of making sure a thread is always at the top, I think they blend in too well with the rest of the threads, making it so that people simply skip over them before posting. Also, stickies are not centralized globally, making it harder to call out overall important issues. There is the FAQ's, but I fear that some people assume "Oh it's just the usual don't offend others and/or do anything illegal" and skip over them. That said, instead of these stickies, I was wondering if a sort of "Guides" page might be more appropriate. If possible, I think it would be best in the same area as the "Unanswered Threads" link, as it would stand out more to people viewing the site. This so called guide's page would have a list of the respective forums categories (with subforums?) that a user could go through to find the appropriate guide. Guides could be a forums post, a Sitepoint article, or possibly external links. I say possibly because it's harder to quality control external links and prevent poor practice sites from trickling in. As for how we delegate something as a guide, my initial thought was that mentors / admins would have to approve the "guides". Now, the viability of that actually happening would depend on if that's something the mentors/admins would feel like doing. I could write up a few guides myself, and comment on the reliability of some guides, but certain areas of the forums I have no experience with (Java for example). I'm open to recommendations here, as I was only able to come up with one decent method for guide approval. Also, I'd be happy to rummage through existing stickies in the forums and combine them into the guide. But before I do that, I just want to get an idea on how well received this would be. Please forgive my wall of text ![]() |

So, there you have it, a giant wall of text, and hours of demonic formatting. This is all the stickies in all of the major forums that either define rules or contain useful information. Actually this is more of a start, as noted by the TODO's spread about.
The next phase is going through and adding various Sitepoint articles in here, then after that addressing posts that are not stickies, but have good information in them. But for now, this should provide a good page for new users to go to for everything, instead of wading through stickies, which don't standout to people sometimes. |

Good Lord Sitepoint has a lot of articles @_@. Well, I integrated articles up to the CSS ones for now, I'll probably put the rest up tommorow.
After this I'll be doing some sub categories, as I didn't realize this site had THAT many articles... |

By the way, I'd also like to take the time to say Thank You to the admins. I've been through enough forums with enough dictator and "Logic? What's that!" type admins that it's nice to see reasonable admins. But hey, it's a nice break . After all that time I spent alone on getting just up to the CSS articles up, I probably needed one . |

OMG! That's an impressive piece of work, Chris. Somehow 'well done' doesn't seem to be enough, but it'll have to do for now.
Well done! ![]() |

Hmm, it looks like self editing isn't going to work out. That said, I have a couple of ways I can go about this:
So if anyone has some ideas on how to go about it, let me know. |

Well done Chris!
As a start I'd at like to see th Sitepoint Forum Guides post in the introductions forum and featured. I've shown this to Matt Magain and we've spoken about a few other places we could link to the thread. We'll work on that. I'll also see if I can get the editing problem fixed. Nice work! |

Okay, I almost finished adding all the articles until I realized it was close to knockout time over here. For now I sent out the full update to the admins for someone to edit the post for me.
Got through a ton of articles and can type vbcode like nobody's business now . Thanks to whoever gets to editing the post for me.Once I put up the rest of the articles, I'll be going through and resorting everything. Some articles needed to be in other categories, and I was just trying to get the articles up, so didn't pay too much attention. After that will be some sub-categorizing. Then that should be it! |

Apparently my post hit some kind of internal max character limit. Looks like I'm going to have to separate them out. Appologies ahead of time for the spam for those subscribed.

Sitepoint Forum Guides
Updates
Introduction This page is meant to be a collection of different guides posted throughout the forums containing useful information, as well as guidelines on posting. The goal of this is to create a centralized location for people to easily locate the information they want to find, as well as handle any frequently asked questions. Note that some of the titles were shortened for easy readability. Last edited by chris_fuel; Mar 27, 2008 at 23:27. |
