Advice on navigation

Hi,
I have been "banging my head against a dead horse" trying to come up with navigation and new sections for my site. I finally think I came up with a decent way to section things off but wanted some feedback. I am not asking for a website review just to look at how I sectioned the following off and if it makes sense...

Shop
Shop
Auction
Classifieds

Explore
Business Directory
Job Listings
Recipies

Discuss
Forums
Chat
Games
Mailing List

Learn
Articles
Terminology
History
Tutorials
Tips
Other Content Specific Items

Business Solutions
Advertise
Partner Program
Contribute
Press Releases

This sounds silly but don't look at my site. Just the above, as I want to see how this works generically.

Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Thanks,

John

John --

It's really hard to say w/o knowing what type of site this is. And "not looking" at your current site.

Couple things before I do go and look to understand you site:

Shop section
Shop
Auction
Classifieds

Shop seems redundant -- maybe call it store, or products

Discuss section

Games doesn't seem to fit so well.

Business Solutions

Press Releases again, doesn't seem to fit.

Any reason why you are keeping with these 4 main sections?

Hey Craig,
I was just worried about them moving my post to website reviews since really all I wanted was opionions on the sections.

Actually, the item under shop would be called eCoffeeShop. Games I can't seem to find a place for but have considered calling Discuss, Community instead...Doesn't have the same ring though...

We have been asked many times by businesses to have a press release posting area. Not sure where that would land with this new navigation.

If you do check out the site you'll see that we have a ton of content and sections but I want to narrow those down as much as possible. Kind of like they did with new Sitepoint design. Thanks for the the comments. I look forward to more discussion on it.

Thanks,

John

What if you did something more like this:

*Shop*
Shop
Auction
Classifieds

*Explore*
Business Directory
Job Listings

*Misc.*
Recipies
Games

*Discuss*
Forums
Chat
Mailing List

*Learn *
Terminology
Tutorials
Tips
Other Content Specific Items

***Secondary Nav****
History
About
Contact Info
Etc.

Advertise
Partner Program
Contribute

News
Articles
Press Releases

The secondary nav wouldn't be as prominent on the page as the othe sections you want to focus on.

Here are a couple of examples I did w/ the type of nav in mind. You'll notice the secondary nave is at the top of the pages. (about- search - contact- etc.)

http://www.bothwellgroup.com/
http://www.ddcg.com/dev/chemicalcoatings

I would also work on the titles a bit more (misc. and explore)

But I like where you're going.

Hey,
Thanks! Articles are a pretty predominant feature on the site so I would probably include those under learn.

On the secondary nav you read my mind. I was thinking I would just have those features in the footer or somewhere less conspicuous for the users.

Also, just to clarify. The press release won't be ours they will be ones submitted by coffee related companies. Although, we will probably have a corporate section (about us) kind of thing for our press releases.

Thanks for the feedback! It's amazing how much it helps have some outside feedback. I stare at the site all the time and sometimes lose grasp of the obvious.

Thanks,

John
