    Unhappy Gradients in Illustrator

    Why won't it work....sob, sob

All i want to do is a apply a gradient in illustrator to an object (its a group of text segments).

I've followed the book to a tee. I've created the gradient, saved it as a swatch, clicked the gradient tool and tried to apply it to the object, but it doesn't work.
I've tried every variation, but nothing seems to change the object colour to that of the gradient colours.
Infact even the default gradients don't work.
Any suggestions on what i could be doing wrong ? I'm using the Pantone process coated swatch library if that makes any difference ? I've tried using the default CMYK library, but that doesn't seem to affect it either.
    Help !

    Thanks in advance.

Have you converted the text to outline first?

    If not, you need to.

Do you have to do that with everything then or just text ?

Every vector object that isn't (editable) text will already be an editable shape/object.
