Can anyone suggest how to create a drop shadow on an object or image in Flash MX?

Sure, just make a copy of the object, change the tint to all black and adjust the alpha on it. And offset the x and y by about 3 pixels each.

Another way to do it, if you want to get fancy
-copy the object and put it on a lower layer or select (move under)
-change the tint to black
-select expand fill edges, and select the desired description (you might want to screw around with this to get the right affect)
-set the offset of xy coordinates to the direction you want to the shadow to be going
-now fine tune, mess with alpha and effects like that
