    Optimal usage of space.
Use of highlighting of table cells - good apporach instead of using graphics.

    Excellent navigation!

    Hi,

I also like the colour effects for navigation. But wonder if perhaps there are too many different navigation bars - three!

I also find the moving logo thingy on the left hand side rather distracting.

    Perhaps a graphic title?

Also I think it would look more balanced if the two bars (the orange nav bar on the left and the space for ads on the right) were the same size.

Finally I think the orange is just a little too much, try more complementary colours - this is a good resource someon e posted at sitepoint recently:
    http://www.colorschemer.com/

Hope the suggestions help. Nice site!

Looks good, extremely fast loading. I'm glad that you chose to use colored tables as opposed to graphics. It keeps the site simple and easy to use, plus fast loading. However, I do believe that it would be nice if you had a nice top of the site graphic. I think that a good graphic always does add to the site.

Other than that, there's not a lot that I can say, as I hate horses, because they are mean. I had a horse bite me once and ever since then, I don't particularly try to befriend them.

Anyway, nice job, hope it does well.

yes there's too many (three) different navigation bars.
I like the top right navigation bar and the one on the left.
you should leave out the one in the middle and it should be fine.

I like the color scheme and the feel of the page.

Your nav bar on top (not the right corner, the second one from top) is not working properly on IE 5 MAC. The change in highlight is changing the other nav bar options as well... So mouse over on "News" blocks out Rider profiles and horse profiles...

    Nice though. I like.

I like the site. I like the colors as well. Maybe the moving graphic in the lower left is somewhat distracting and it might look nicer if the left and right were more the same size. Also what about some pictures of horses. I love horses and most horse lovers would relate to nice pictures. Good luck with your site. sdeaglewoman at http://www.abettermassage.net

    Just a quick suggestion:

Make sure you don't assume that everyone
to your site will understand your link
    shorthand. Eg,

    Results - for what?
    Ed said - who's Ed?
    On the trail - ?

These may be placeholders, or I could
be completely daft. But I do a lot of GUI
design and it's been completely drilled
into my head to try and NOT make users
click something to find out what it's about.

Just my 2 cents worth. The site looks really
    good, by the way.

    hi

i have not read any other response to your site, so here goes.

Front page. Nice color. Menu on top uses smallish text.
Center text under Coming soon is small.

Good contrast between text and background.

You could use the title tag in the <a></a> tag
though that works only in IE

    example: <a href="#" title="hello there!>whats up?</a>

its good for displaying comments about the link

its just like the alt="" in the image tag

Other than having to many navigation bars I like the site layout, colours and content.

A picture of a horse would be nice somewhere.

To me it looks like you're using too many colors on the site.. pick a couple and use those consistently. Right now I see purple, blue, grey, orange, red, and white! I would actually like to see some colors that might remind me of horses and their environment.. like green, brown, black, white.. neutral earthy colors would be easier on the eyes.

The flash at the bottom looks good.. except for those white lines. My attention and eyes were constantly being drawn to them. The rest of it looks good though. I would just cut out the lines.

Wow. I love the colors! And the graphics in the bottom left for the news and results. It is well organized and is easy to follow. Good job.

Well this site certainly has a lot of navigation. I might comment that there are two many variations of colours also and perhaps you don't need to use three navigational opitions. The top and left navigation would be sufficent.

I like the little animation though adds some movement to the page.

I like the rollover effect on the top bar although I'm not to sure of the colours greys and purples don't really go well that's what I think anyway.

Ok its been 2 months or so since I first posted this site for review. Anyway we haven't had much time to spend working on it (real sites/jobs pay real money!)

We have made a few changes to the navigation and features the site offers.

The colours are going to be left as they are (either love 'em or hate 'em) :-)

We havenít got a classifieds program running yet, so if anyone could point us towards decent program it would be very much appreciated.

    http://www.horsestuff.au.com

Anyway remember this is just a side project sorta site, it doesnt get much time allotted to it, so dont be to harsh on it.

Thanks in advance, all comments are welcome!

    Hi

Welcome Back, Hope the summer is perfect for you. I have changed my individual process for reviewing. I do not know how much use this will be for your site, but lets hope.

I liked the site before, I like it now.

First a look at the code for the front page.

The body tag includes marginheight and marginwidth, neither of which are attributes of the body element.
    -------------
    <a href="http://www.web-design.net.au">

this code could include the accesskey= for accessability impaired.
    --------------
    <a href="http://www.horsestuff.au.com" title="Back to the HorseStuff.au.com homepage" class=guide>

The use of accesskey for the links may help improve your client accessability.
    --------------
    <tr height=1>

height is not an attribute of the tr tag. Multiple occurances of this error.
    --------------
    <A HREF=\"http://www.TheCounter.com\" TARGET=\"_top\">

There are a couple of backslashes in this that probably should not be there. It did cause my checker to alarm with an error.
    ---------------
    <IMG"+
    " BORDER=0 SRC=\"http://c2.thecounter.com/id=1479931"+r+"\"><\/A>")}
There are two problems with this code. The second is the <\/A> which might need to be </A>
The first is an unrecognized attribute in element " img. Recommend taking a look around this string and checking it against the source.
    --------------
A look at the links confirms your comments in the reopening of the review.

    Thanks for sharing

    Peace

Probably the only thing I disliked about it is the title up top left. It just looks a little plain and unremarkable. To me a good logo is an important part of a site first impression and would liked to have seen something more interesting than plain text for that. Other than that it looks and works great.

I like your site, especially the topright nav bar. The upper-left logo has got to go, preferably replaced with something a bit less plain (maybe to do with horses? )
You might also want to add one of the scripts beneath:

A very simple classified's script but easily customisable HTML: http://bliss.seagull.net/pclassifieds.html

    Another one:
    http://www.e-classifieds.net/products/free.html

And since three's the charm, and this one is my favourite:

    Good Luck!

Thanks FatPiper, that last sugestion looks like it will do what we need it to do. The free version of e-classifieds is so dodgey it aint funny.

To everyone else that replied - all your sugestions are going to be put to good use.....thanks!

edshuck - you raised some interesting points that i missed.......The accesskey tag is defintally worth including.

I think i'll go into hibernation for another month and come back when its finished.

If anyone wants to have a go at designing a decent logo for the site, e-mail me at steven@web-design.net.au . we'll give you a banner on the site for the next year if we use your logo!

The site loads really quickly - a plus. However, I question the use of so many colors! Furthermore, when I see that site, I don't think "horses." Perhaps colors like brown and grey would be more appropriate for this site rather than purple and orange

Also, my eyes might be deceiving me, but i see that "Your Horse Stuff WebSite" being in Arial font, while the rest is in Verdana... if it is, then try to keep fonts consistent. If that IS Verdana, then slap me silly!

My first inpression when I loaded the site was that it had been based on a template, which at first I thought was bad but after studying the site I found lots of things I liked, the font was a good choice and I like the X's that you use as bullet points. The shaded search index looks nice but also makes navigation alot easier. Over all I liked the site but I might suggest toning down the colours at the top.
