    Removing the browser border

    I came across CSS code that removes the border you see around your effective space in your browser. At first I thought it was probably something for Internet Explorer but it validated without problems.

    Code:
    html
    {
      border-style: none;
    }
    I never heard about it and I was wondering if it works and how it is displayed in other browsers. It's the difference between a horizontal scrollbar on a resolution of 800x600 for me.

    I tried playing with it using Top style and it doesn't show it as being invalid. I can't find it on the W3 site though.

    I do notice that there isn't any change when viewing the page in Netscape 7.0 unless you use a style like dotted or dashed. Then it shows up that way but none doesn't show much if any change.

    JMulder, can you post screenshots (or details) showing a page/window with it and one without it?

    I'm curious to know what it is you are referring to as I'm not clear from your description.

    Are you talking about the window 'chrome' or simply the browser offset margin?

    (I'm presuming it's gonna be an IE6 affair)

    I tried this in IE6 and the result is attached. Looks a bit buggy.

    Here's the code I used:
    Code:
    <style type="text/css">
    <!--
    html {
    	  border: 5px dashed #006;
    }
    -->
    </style>

    Sure, no problem. Below you see an image comparing the upper left corner of your browser's effective space. One showing SitePoint with a greyish ~2PX border and the other my own site with no borders at all.

    Hope that clears it up.

    I used the same code except with border-style and it worked well in NS7 IE 6 shows only a solid line around the page no matter what.

    I tried your code with various browsers (NS6, Mozilla 1.4a, Opera6, Opera7, IE6), and got several different results; Opera6 didn't display the border at all.

    Mac browsers (compliant mode):

    Chimera 0.6.0/Moz 1.2/Netscape 7 all perfect.

    Opera 6/IE 5.2 collapse the border in the absence of a height: 100% attribute for body and html selectors.
    Opera still has the issue about not reaching the right-hand edge of the window.
    Both browsers also misinterpreted height: 100% for the body and html selectors causing the page to be taller than the window height.
    So neither Opera 6 or IE5.2 are able to position the border around the edges of the page when using proper methods.

    Certainly allows for some interesting effects (besides getting rid of the border -- http://www.goodchrist.com

    That's really interesting! You can make people belive you have used iframes or something, driving the nuts, when they can't figure out how the browser suddenly changed.

    I'll try something like that and see what I can get

    I was reffering to changing the borders around the html, not the site. It'll get there one day, though. My problem is I'm just a little too obsessive-compulsive--my desire to do things exactly the right way often gets in the way of my productivity. I've been working on that site for the better part of a year! :-)
