Space arount the Button element in IE

I generally like to use the button element. A button can contain html, incl. images. Also it can be disabled with a nice effect.

But IE adds more space around the button-text the longer the text is. E.g. there's more text around the text 'select an image' the the text 'ok'.

One can hard-code a width of the button, which is a possible but annoying way to go.

I would much rather like to work on the padding of the button, but I can't control it. Specifying padding-right: 0px; gives me a different padding-right on buttons with different length of text.

    Does anybody have any tips?

off the top of my head: can you use the CSS margin property on buttons?... I know it helped me once for a different element.
