That's nice, Adam. But I really quite like the orange-red as it is now, if I'm honest. It's bold and in your face and I don't think it's a bad way. Now I agree about some of the greys I'm seeing. Those don't really seem to work, but the orange I quite like.

New site looks great. Great example of using pure CSS to do the layout, and making it work on "most" browsers.
I am running MS IE 6.0 SP1 on W2K SP3 and 1024 x 768 -- Like others have reported, I also have a horizontal scroll bar when viewing an article. There is only whitespace in the part that needs to be scrolled to, so at least there is nothing cut off on the right of the page. I did notice the horizontal scroll bar goes away when I hide the left side nav. I do not have a horizontal scroll bar when I view the sitepoint home page. I get a horizontal scroll bar sometimes when viewing the forum pages and there is text in the area that is off the screen.
Just a couple of "nits":
1. The heading for an article no longer displays the current rating for the article. The only way I have found to get this information is to select "View all articles by..." in the Bio section and then find the article in the list to get the rating. This seems like a lot of extra work to find out how valuable other readers found the current article that I am reading.
2. I like to use the "Print" action so I can read the entire article in "one page". I don't like having to open 2-X pages to get view all the information. I do understand why it is "chopped up", so I am not complaining about the 2-X pages :-). The Print action used to be on every page (I think). Now I have to open the article and go to the last page to get access to the "Print" action. Most other sites I visit put the "Print" (or "Printer Friendly") action on every page.

It looks great. The only things I'm noticing are with article ratings. In Mozilla 1.2.1, the number spacing in the ratings section of articles is smooshed together whereas there should be some space between them. Also, the article ratings are not displayed anywhere anymore. They should probably have a rating at the beginning/end of the article.
I'm finally back home and had time to put together a few ideas, so here they are. See the attached image.
(BTW, I understand that the center column is quite small. It's due to the image size.)

I still don't understand why you've used gif text in the tabs when to all intents and purposes the font used looks just like (and probably is) one of the generic html text fonts.
Imho, you shouldn't waste the extra load associated with gif text tabs on such a generic font.
Surely it would make more sense to either use a font that necessitates the use of gif text or (more obviously) don't use gif text at all for the tabs, just straight html text.
In its current state, it just seems kinda pointless.

We only used GIF's on the forums. Again, we would like to point out that there is much more to SitePoint then the forums.
The main site is purely CSS driven. On the forums it is more difficult to go to a CSS and Standards driven format because of the HTML generated by the software package. For that purpose, it was decided to use images instead of text simply because it was the easiest and quickest way to implement the look and feel. As time goes by, we will be going through the entire set of forum templates and redoing them to be able to handle a more standards compliant presentation without the bulky table layout. Since the state of the templates is not fixed by the software manufacturer at this time, it simply is not prudent to do so right now because that would introduce bugs into the community portion of SitePoint.
p.s. Very nice work Adam.
Fair enough.
Didn't mean to sound aggy. Just couldn't understand the whys and wherefores of that particular decision.
Can now.![]()

And as Wayne reinterated, the forums are going to take some serious re-engineering to take advantage of CSS. We're keen to do it, but it's not just a cased of dropping in a few DIVs and attaching the stylesheets from the content site. They are used in a fundamentally different way so the solution will need to reflect that.

That moving column on the RH side of the main site is really annoying. So much so that it is keeping me from exploring that part of SitePoint. I do have pieces of cardboard that I use to block out such irritations from view but I really resent having to go through the hassle.
The very bottom link on the sliding toolbar is a Toggle to disable it's movement. It's cookie driven so it won't bother you again until that expires.
quite eye-catching, no?Originally Posted by AlexW

Thanks beetle and AlexW. Worked like a charm. No more sliding RH column!!

We're using a list that runs horizontally to do that article rating bit. Nice code compared to the dirty table that used to hold those radio buttons but the 'Mozilla smooshing issue' is a problem. Setting margins and padding to 0px still reserves a reasonable amount of space around those elements when you stack them together on most browsers besides Moz.
We'll figure a way though![]()
Use attribute selectors to add padding/margin to Moz
div#feedback input[type=radio] {
padding: someValue;
margin: someValue;
}
