Expand Appearance Issue in Adobe Illustrator CS4

Guys please! i have my object selected but still the 'expand appearance' doesn't work! It is greyed out! any help will be much appreciated!

With issues like this, I find that if you Google it, there will always be someone else who's had the same problem and aleady asked about it. I tried Googling the issue, and there were quite a few offerings, such as this:
