My (admittedly simple, built in my kitchen) sites have been generating quite a bit of press for me (articles in USA Today, Marie Claire Magazine, Home&Garden Television, etc).
Yesterday, I found this...
http://health.discovery.com/tv/feat/...yinvaders.html
(note: this is a 8second flash load, and 8second "movie" - that's me at the bottom of the page
It is more "media" than "press" related, but the visitors to my site would think it's cool. (can you believe no one told me it was up ?!?!)
But I digress...I'm thinking of setting up a press room to "store" all of this stuff. Has anyone here done that?
How has it benefitted you?
Thanks in advance!
Kat

The press feeds on the press. By accumulating your positive articles, mentions, awards, etc. you both legitimize your site and provide archives so that MORE press will also believe your site to be news worthy.
Save the articles, mentions, etc.!!!! Make a page on the site (combined with a media kit) so that people can check it out. Keep hard copies for your own records. It's definitely worth the time.
Now... how did you get so much press? Pass on the secrets to your success for us all!

No secrets really...I just followed a lot of the advice at this site...participate in newsgroups...email lists, etc.
I spent TONS of time doing this in the beginning (at one point I was signed up on 80 email lists at egroups), but the payoff was great...
Most of the reporters that contacted me said that they had gone to "topic specific chat rooms" for research, and "heard" people chatting about me.
One thing, too, is I really personalized my sites...people don't refer to my sites as an entity, they refer to them online as "kat's sites"...
It's kind of neat...once the word-of-mouth started, my visitor count went up exponentially. Both sites were really just personal "collections" kind of like hobbies, and they weren't designed for the amount of traffic, so now I'm shelling out the bucks to have them professionally re-designed.
Oh...this just in...I just got a call from an organization that knows me from my site, and they wanted to know if I would be interested in possibly appearing on "Oprah" as she might be doing a show on something related to one of my sites...uhhhh, hmmmmm, I'll have to check my schedule, but I THINK I can make some time for "Madame O"
Anyway, I've found the advice at this site to be FANTASTIC, and I read each and every article and newsletter...it was from a tip in a marketing newsletter that helped me get into Yahoo!...so my best advice...read, and follow-through...
Hope this helps!

I definitely think it's worthwhile to mention press your site has received. I just got word that my site's going to be mentioned in a Rolling Stone article which will be the first big press exposure. I'll definitely make it know though if it actually happens.

Well, it hasn't been published yet.
I'll just have to wait and see whether it works out or not.

Well, I took my website down and a day later it was mentioned on page 30 (or 130?) of the November 23 issue of Rolling Stone, in case you were wondering.

Here is what it says:
"The Plebius Press [plebius.org] runs an Activist News Network, with stories that focus attention on some oft-ignored corners of society. The perspective runs from environmental to anarchist to socialist with other flavors of leftism thrown in."
I haven't put the site back up, i'm still debating whether i want to or not.

Wow, congratulations to both of you for gaining worldwide media coverage on your sites! That's something to be proud of. I'd put it on the main page and brag about it
Definitely post a link to the article where your site's mention appears. It helps boast your credibility by leaps and bounds.
