    What "Gadgets"? In what context?
    "Handed down" to where/whom?

    I would suspect the question relates to electrical devices that have electronic data storage capability, i.e. flash drives or hard drives. And what should be done to safeguard risk of personal information being stored (not being erased) before you resell the device. For example securely wiping a HDD so that old data cannot be recovered, etc. Other than that we aren't going anywhere with this thread until it is written in clearer English.
