    what comes next? 1..11..21..1211..111221

    1

    11

    21

    1211

    111221

    ?

I would guess it's a number, possibly involving only 1s and 2s - that's about as far as I got though.

for those interested, it's from net riddler
teckis - that's news to me.

I won't spoil it for you, but I'll ell you right now that your assumptions are incorrect. This is one you really have to think "outside the box" for.

    LOL thats fantastic

You should try some of Mensa's challenges - I've got a book of them around somewhere that used to drive me insane

    Mensa Challenges: http://www.mensa.org/workout.html

(I think I got the addy above right, not too sure though)

have done a the mensa challenge before - not too shoddy result as well

anode: I've tried binary, tried most numeric bases, tried word testing (thought it might be 1=vowel 2=consonant sorta thing), tried lots for a good few days and am still not quite getting it.

more help (ie the answer) vaguely appreciated. I'll help you with stage 1.8 if you tell me

Yeah - take a look at the site that pootergeist linked in his first post

I showed the sequence to a few people today and no-one got it, and most of them were kicking them selves when they saw how simple to actual solution is

Yeah, I got a Mensa membersihp through their site, only cost 500$ though . That's the yearly dues anyways, but still cool to be offered. Friend of mine is one of the leaders of Mensa Canada, and he blows my mind...

oddly, that doesn't help in the slightest , 'cepting maybe pushing the idea that there might be a 3 in there somewhere.

LOL - I was gonna have a go at mmj for spoiling it, but I see it didn't help

    I'll give you a hint

Its not a specific sequence or any sort of binary, prime number type things etc.

And might I suggest that you might want to read the numbers aloud

[edit: giving to much away so editied a hint out ]

one - eleven - twentyone - a thousand two hundred and eleven

    that doesn't help muchly

one - one one - two one - one two one one

    also non helping.

on an aside: how do you know your answer is correct (unless you've got to stage 10+ as well) without sorta lending it to me so I can test it?
teckis - that's news to me.

PM me with what you guess and I'll tell you if your right, or anyone else here who has got the solution. Although it all becomes clear when you get the meaning of the numbers.

thanks too for not just telling the answer.

    next ones quite tricky.

PS - anyone with snags on 1.1 - 1.10, just ask.

Just saw this thread, and being a fan of mathematical sequences tried it. It did bug me for a bit, then I saw the hints above and it bugged me further. Then I really thought about it and it did become clear.

My hint for those still working on it, throw mathematics and grammer out the window, they don't apply.

OK, I'm wasting work time trying this contest out also, and now I too am having trouble on 1-3. It just bugs me (pun intended).

Dang thesaurus is no help either.

    Hehe. I wasn't born yesterday

It appears that the number will always consist of ones, twos and threes. As far as I can see, it's impossible to get a 4 or higher. Anyone else notice this?

Yep, a 4 or higher would be impossible by the basic, err dual nature of the number sequences composition. As would 4 of the same numbers in a row.

It's tempting to work out the sequence to a hundred places or so to see if it falls into a repeating loop.

    1.3 - vague hints

the insect in question is an ant
also of note is that they are global transport

sling the two ideas together with a bit of pun-ism and you get a very common 9 letter word.

1.4 hint - think of words for horse.
teckis - that's news to me.

[mutters] I am not programmed to think illogically [/mutters]
Well by now you've discovered that it is quite logical. You could easily program a function to do it. You don't have to know english, and you don't need any "fuzzy" logic. You don't need to use an n^2 or n log n algorithm. You don't need to look for a pattern across a range of values; you can find the next number from just one value. You can work backwards too - you can just as easily find the previous number given any value.

In fact, I originally drew up a look-up table for it, on paper, but once I worked it out I discovered that it was easy enough to do in my head.

just curious, how would you have guessed ant ? there's no hint whatsoever about the specific type of insect ?

anyway..I'm still trying to picture ants and something global.... no luck

Ditto. 1-3 is blowing my mind. 1-1 and 1-2 wouldn't have been so hard if they didn't REQUIRE you to click the button instead of clicking enter
