Question Carousel Sliders--What is the Best Practice? Are these on the Way Out?

So my boss really loves the look of IBM's website.

    http://www.ibm.com/us/en/

and wants to include these rotating sliders in our design but I want to be clear on the best practive from a UI perspective. She is proposing 4 or 5 main features and I don't think that works.

Plus, having scrolling sliders (on the bottom too) like IBMS does just seems like overkill. Thoughts? Is this overkill?

These are very common on Websites. They can be coded with good clean semantic mark up and animated with Javascript.
One thing to be aware of is that each unit has the same width and height. If they have different widths, they end up being cut off when you slide.
On the IBM site they use images to control the dimensions of everything tightly. Though it is less accessible.
