We have had Macs and PC's on our network here at work, so I know it can be done. I don't know much about networking though.

I didn't think it would be easy but at least I know its possible now!?
Hey Nicki - I have been to Gibraltar! - it was quite misty and overcast when I went but it was just like being transported to a part of Britain but some how not!?!?!?
I went up the rock anyway and met the insane monkeys!!!

If you use TCP/IP it is just as simple as plugging them in and installing Appletalk on the server.

I don't know what kind of hassle Appletalk is though.

I don't either - just that I have an iMac and a Laptop and am planning on a new desktop and don't want to rely on Zip-disk's to transfer files all the time!

    Thanks for the tip though...

At my part-time job (working at an elementary school managing the network etc), there is a large network of ~200 iMacs that are managed by 3 IBM Nefinity servers, a few G3s, and a G4. Not sure exactly how it is done, but it is really interesting.

In case anyone wants to know the specs, it's something like this:

-IBM Nefinity Server to manage IP addresses
-IBM Nefinity server to manage E-Mail
-IBM Nefinity server to manage NetVista (Internet etc)
-Apple G4 server to manage users (set privileges etc)
-Apple G4 server to control printing (split jobs between 3 laser printers)
-Apple G3 server that acts as a storage place
-Apple G3 server just used for experiments (compatibility)
-Apple G4 server that keeps a backup of everything
-Apple G3 server that is waiting for a position (or can replace another server)
-Generic server that is used for attendance

Now, that's a total waste. But it's lots of fun working with all those servers. The server room has access to 5 servers within sitting position, and the computer lab has all the rest within arms reach, plus a few test workstations.

I'm using AppleTalk on my network at the moment, running on a Windows 2000 server. Its pretty easy to set up...to make Mac compatible shares you just click the Mac checkbox when making shares.
The installation of AppleTalk was pretty easy too.

    Hope that helps!

Yes, I always used to forget to turn on Apple Talk and then wondered why the stupid thing never worked.

z7 - what you encountered is a meteorological phemonam known as LEVANTER. It is an easterley wind that travels over the ocean and when it comes across Gib it gets stuck ont he top of the Rock. SOmetimes it is really weird becasue you can feel the dampness in the air.

Gib is ace though isn't it? Where in the UK are you?
