why is perl "scripting" and php "programming"?

they are both scripting, and they are both programming. depends on what definition you use. since 'programming' sounds l33t3r i surmise the board admins are php fanatics (then again who isnt? everyone loves php, even the fools who can't tell their head from their *** (which is the majority)).

    Hi,

Any particular reason you're so mad about this? Scripting and programming are synonymous as far as interperted languages are concerned. If you haven't noticed thie channel both forums are in is called "Program your site." If it makes you feel better, the definitive Perl book is called "Programming Perl."

Actually it's some smart thinking by the "admin"...

When people search using a search engine, those combinations are the most commen typed in (ie php progamming)...

But it's no problem! geez, talk about touchy

perl has been around much longer and the phrases "perl scripts" or "perl scripting" have become widely used.

PHP is newer, so it didn't have such well definied phrases that everyone uses, and because of alliteration it sounds better when followed by programming.

Plus you don't want to keep using the same words when you're doing any kind of writing.

    Perl Scripting
    PHP Scripting
    ASP Scripting
    ColdFusion Scripting
    Java Scripting

    It'd be boring.

Or, we can call all those Internet Development

Slightly off topic - does anyone find it a little offending being called a "website designer"? Even a "website developer" is a little lowly sounding. I mean, it's more than just websites. And the phrase makes it sound like anyone can do it.

Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I call myself an Internet Developer!

Web application developer? You're not really doing too much that's not going out over port 80, are you?

I see nothing demeaning about Web Designer or Web Developer. If you add the "site" in, it does sound a bit small potatoes though.

You could use either "scripting" or "programming" to describe either Perl or PHP.

In my mind, both Perl and PHP are kind of "scripted" languages, as opposed to "compiled" languages. However, there is nothing wrong, in my opinion, with describing the process of writing in either type of language "programming".

I like the term designer... designers create blueprints for skyscrapers and airplanes (just a couple examples), I don't think it is a lowly term.

    - and to think I almost missed that one

For what its worth I have always seen PHP, Perl etc as scripting, and languages that have to be compiled as programming - however PHP programming has a nicer ring to it than PHP Scripting
