I'm just looking for a new html editor. Which would you recomend? I don't want a lot of features just color coded syntaxing and a few other little ones.

I would recommend using CuteHTML. It's bundled with the latest version of CuteFTP and has color coded syntax. Also, when you type in a tag the attributes for the tag pop up in a menu that you can use to select which attribute you would like to use. For certain attributes, such as color, the values also pop up in a menu.

Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage 2000 are my recommendations.
I use CuteHTML as my default editor for DW, was part of the bundle with CuteFTP and found that I liked their HTML editor.
I also recommend the following:
Evrsoft-1st Page is "in the process of developing the next version of the world's best free HTML editor" (there was also a conflicting name issue) but you can still can download their current HTML Editor -- http://www.evrsoft.com/download/
And HotDog 6.0 is another good HTML Editor that you can try out for 30-days. If you can find the August 2000 issue of .net magazine, they have a free 5.5 Version of HotDog on the attached CD.
...The key is to try each of the many programs available and decide which one is best for you!

Thanks for all your help. I think Evrsoft-1st Page is what Im looking for. I like the fact that it comes with 450+ java scripts and 15 dhtml scripts and has a good spell checker.

i think i bought hotdog pro back in ver. 1.5 maybe even 1.0.
now it is at 6.0 with a 6.2 maintenance release out (coming from 6.0 to 6.2 would be a freebe) but they are doing a maintenance release 6.5 and it is dedicated to including php.
sausage.com is where it will be found. if you write one page a year and that is for fun, a helper app for word would probably do. but for more serious stuff hotdog is a family of products. 30 days is a really tight evaluation of the hotdog 6.x there is just so much in the package. it is more lean than the 5.5 (16 17 or 18 meg don't remember which). but it did EVERYTHING.

I use cutehtml. Some of the features I use alot are the find/replace for all open documents, the color to hex converter, and the ability to save code snippits.
I dont need alot of bells and whistles though, I used notepad for 5 years.

Dreamweaver and Frontpage are not html editors, or very good ones anyways, they are wysiwyg editors. Less and less people use them as they get more and more experienced.

I don't agree with this. Yes, they are not "really" HTML editors (although many people call them that)...but to say that more experienced people do not use them is, to me, too much of a generalization. Experience level has no direct effect on what you use.Originally posted by aspen

They edit HTML, therefore they are HTML editors.
I learned HTML in 1995 (back in the days before there was a WYSIWYG editor), then just a year ago, I switched to WYSIWYG. I used FrontPage, then Dreamweaver. I use WYSIWYG editors mostly for site layouts and making tables, and TextPad or AceHTML for writing content.
I would recommend HomeSite 4.5 and DreamWeaver 3.0

Take a survey. Cross reference years experience making webpages with type of editor preferred. Sure, not everyone who is more experienced stays away from wysiwyg editors. But you will see a definite trend.I don't agree with this. I really agree with WebKat. Try them. Really study them. Not like I sometimes do, load and forget.
I often use clipboard because I am too lazy to learn proper use of my really powerful, specialized applications.
I took the recommendation of TWT Commish and dl'ed an application. WOW. The learning curve continues - mostly straight up.

Don't have the time or resources to take a survey...but it's one thing to say that WYSIWYG editors are for less experience people, and saying that that's where the trend is going.
Just because someone uses WYSIWYG editors doesn't mean they aren't experience web designers. They could of started off with the editors and gradually gotten better and better until they can make pretty good designs. I know a handful of people (and design companies) who use Frontpage and they are as experienced as anyone in the field.
Many of the best programers still use Dreamweaver just to speed up some things like tables. It's more of just a short cut then anything.
Well said. I can code a page in plain HTML if I like...but it's MUCH faster and easier to see it as its created right in front of me...we all know that people work more efficiently with visual aides.
